Does anyone know anyone that has converted to Islam?

Hello Assalaam Alaikum

I am a british Asian Muslim and i am currently studying a MA in social work. I am thinking about my dissertation for next year. I want to look at exploring the experiences of converts to islam, why tehy convert, difficulties faced, negative reactions maybe even experiences of harassment etc etc

I would find this fascinating to do. However I am fidning it very difficult finding people to interview or give questionnaires to.

I was wandeirng if there are any brothers or sisters who have converted to islam themselves, or knows someone that has. If so i would b very greatful if they would be willing to answer some questions for me. The data would be annonomised so there would be no way of individuals being identified.

Also I am based in the UK so if there is anyone in the Uk who wouldnt mind taking part in a telephone interview I would be really really greatful.

best wishes

Wa salaams
Waheeda

P.s i dont have full membership so wont be able to reply 2 any emails unless you leave me ur personal email address x

Thank you for your comment, sorry for the delay in getting back to u :)

I guess to an extent you are ryt. dont understand why ppl get so scared of religion. i guess cos its the opposite to western life as we know it.. ppl wnat 2 continue to do all those things agaisnt religion because it gives them pleasure here and now.

its a shame tho. However i also think there are ppl out there that just dont like muslims. due to recent media coverage of muslims this makes matter worse :S

billi. it's not only because hate. maybe some people don't hate, but usually when people see someone who is little bit religious, they treat him with careful. u mentioned people weren't fast to u enough because u were wearing the scarf. but also if people saw a Jew man wearing that black hat and has a weird beard they will be little slow to approach him too. and i think same thing goes with religious people. we all know Islam is about peace, and it's innocent from what have been said about him. just don't fear no one and just put ur trust on God because all what's in this life is temporary. and u will see changes. life is a trick, it shouldn't fool us. we have the Quran and we know better.

The above is a link to an organisation set up to empower muslims in Coventry and surrounding area. Two of the committee members are British muslim reverts. Their contact details are available on their website. I'm sure they will be more than happy to help. If they can 't personally provide you with an interview, no worries, I have a feeling they know many people who can.

Good Luck!

Assalaam Alaikum

Thanks New Cairo i agree with u. simply being born into a muslim family doenst mean that u automatically have faith.

in terms of some1 that comes to islam from a different religion all together it is a big step because it is a total lifestyle chnage.

however being born into islam in theory should be easier 2 practice because we have so many influences around us. parents etc etc.. soemtymes tho these influences are not always positive.
even if ur born into a muslim family u still one day come to a point where u decide u want to find out more and ur faith increases. i guess it is like taking the shahada. declaration of faith.

marshlaha i am really pleased for you that you have come to this point in your life. marshlaha. may allah swt continue to increase ur faith and imaan :) Ameen

Before, when i read the Quran ... i read pages without understanding or while i read the quran I think of something else than what's in the Quran.... But after true faith enter the heart, you stop on every word in the quran to analyze it and understand it, and u mostly feel every word in the quran and u know it's the truth.
and God show this path to those who are honestly want to step forward to get close to Him. "En allah yahdi elayhi man yunib" Quran. (transalation: God shows the truth path to those who step forward to him"

God choose whatever he wants to show him the true Path, and ofcurse people hear this hundred times but they don't really understand what does it mean. You get that wierd feeling inside of u and evidence that this is the true path and THIS IS WHAT HAPPEND TO ME. it started with a Dream. so u can say my faith has increase, i started to see, listen and feel things i haven't exprience it before. and God is one there is no doubt about it.

u can say no and yes. being muslim dosen't necessary mean u r a true believer. for example someoen born in a muslim family therefore he become a muslim. so Is he a muslim because he born in a muslim family? what if he was born in christian/jewish/hindu family? will he just follow what they believed blindy without thinking!
