"Don't be judgemental'' -- what do people really mean by this
Are you a judgmental person? How do you know you're not? Are we all judgmental in one way or another?
1) You shouldn't judge what you don't know... like judging the book by its cover.
2) You shouldn't judge others before you judge yourself... like you preach and you don't pray type of notion....
No matter how hard you try or how strong your Iman is, you will always judge others.... you are not supposed to... because only god can judge, but its our nature as humans to Judge....
Donia>>> I love SF... its a wicked city.. much like Vancouver, only problem is too many RAINBOW COLORS... you know what I mean... :)
I think judgmentalism can be defined as stereotyping in that you already have preset feelings and opinions of other people. The bottom line to avoid being judgmental is to try to listen, understand and accept.
so Yarah agrees with Sura and Sura agrees with Yarah! What's up with that? And yarah you not only live in a liberal city you also live in the most liberal area of the city ); but this should only make you more accepting don't you think?
Fatima I totally agree and I'll add to that an example/saying of my daily work life: "managers make sure things get done on time, leaders make sure the right things are managed in other words managers do things right while leaders do the right thing" and the right thing of course never comes out of drawing conclusions rather listening and understanding before making decisions. the wisdom is most successful people are not judgmental
This reminds me of Mother Theresa?s saying ?something like (I don?t remember) ?when u judge people ..u have no time to love them?? Personally speaking, I think there is nothing like ?Right/Wrong?, ?Good/Bad?, what might be right to u, might be vice-versa to others, ?just listen to what he /she is saying , never draw ur own conclusion, if so,..it?s like,?u have an opinion, then on the top of it another opinion, then again another one?so it goes on ?,& I think this is very humane & anybody can overcome it,? just needs a little practice, ?.whereas, I actually believe in Indian railway system?s motto ?less luggage, -more comfort? ;)
Sura I think me living in SF,one of the most liberal cities in the US if I might say, made me judgemental.See,it's just so hard to fight, for me at least hahaha
i think we should define what judgementalism is...because i truly believe we are all judgemental to some extent or another...yara i think the same way too...no matter how educated we become, we will never grasp the TRUE feeling of another person's experience, even if we've been through the same thing before...humans are selfish beings...
however, i dont' believe that middle easterners are any more judgemental than north americans. i think that ignorance sometimes makes a person judgemental, and there is a lot of that in north america. most arabs are very cultured and AT LEAST listen to international news unlike north americans. you can meet an uneducated arab on any street and they'll be able to discuss political situations anywhere in the world. we can not make the same generalization to educated north americans, unfortunately.
I think that judgments are OK as long as they are well thought out. In other words, if they do not stem from prejudice, narrow-mindedness or even bloody-mindedness. Far too often I see people jump to conclusions and make judgments that are poorly thought out or downright racist.
Having said that I agree with Hana'a. I have run across people who are not judgmental though few but they do exist.
I agree with Sura. That's why we should always fight this by trying to explore about other views, cultures and religions.People who come from the middleeast tend to be more judgemental because of the lack of intermingling with different cultures and also due to the lack of democracy and freedom of thinking.
i think every person is judgemental. its nature...your brain and your logic develop from your experiences. ie as a child you are wired to think that stoves are hot, so you tend to be careful around them.... if you use experience to evaluate something, then you are biased and in turn judgemental in my opinion.
it is almost impossible for any one of us to be able to truly feel what others have been through, so when we look at them (regardless of how unbiased we are), we will judge them.
I think we are not all judgemental, but i know it for a fact that i am. i hate this thing about me, but i can't help it. you know, i have taken a personality test, which is not like the ones on the net, because i've taken at the university one of a course requirements thing, and it yields a 4 letter thing, one of the scales is whether you are judgemental or a perseption person, i turned out to be judgemental, which was not actually a new thing!!! a jusdgemental person tends to jump to conclusions fast, and judge before knowing the whole scoop about something. well, you tend to mellow with time, but not change, i tell you! :)
