Bly blames Harrington for Mariucci's firing
Quarterback 'hasn't given us anything', Lions cornerback says

Detroit Lions cornerback Dre' Bly blamed starting quarterback Joey Harrington for the firing Monday of head coach Steve Mariucci, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

"We're all at fault, but I just feel like Joey's been here four years, and being the No. 3 pick in the draft, he hasn't given us anything," Bly told the paper. "He hasn't given us what the third pick in the draft should give us.

"If we'd had production on offense, in particular the quarterback position, Mooch wouldn't have been fired. If Jeff Garcia hadn't gotten hurt, we wouldn't be in this position today. Mooch wouldn't have gotten fired."

Backup quarterback Jeff Garcia, who played for Mariucci in San Francisco, also took shots at management, saying, "You start to question whether the organization has the people in place who can go about making the proper selections," Garcia told WXYT-AM, according to the paper. "You really have to question that."

Garcia suffered a broken leg in the final preseason game and missed the first five games of the regular season.

Harrington, the third overall pick in 2002, has failed to be consistent throughout his career. The Lions signed 35-year-old Garcia to push or replace Harrington, but he has been nagged by injuries and an inability to throw deep passes.

After two-plus seasons and a 15-28 record, Mariucci was fired Monday after he was unable to turn around a franchise with one playoff victory since 1957.

The Lions promoted defensive coordinator Dick Jauron to succeed him on an interim basis.

?We started off this season with high expectations,? team president Matt Millen said. ?We have underachieved as a football team.?

Millen hired both Mariucci and his predecessor, Marty Mornhinweg, and drafted or signed most of the current players. Since Millen took over in 2001, Detroit is an NFL-worst 20-55.

Despite the results, the former NFL linebacker and TV analyst was given a five-year extension before this season.

Millen said he accepts accountability for Detroit?s record during his four-plus seasons, but said a coaching change was necessary.

?This is a brutal business and at times, good people suffer a cruel fate,? he said.

Millen also fired offensive line coach Pat Morris and tight ends coach Andy Sugarman, and demoted Ted Tollner from offensive coordinator to tight ends coach. Greg Olson will call plays as the team?s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, starting Sunday at home against Minnesota.

Jauron said his first inclination was to not accept the job.

?It?s hard for me to stand up here in this position because Steve is a friend,? said Jauron, who had a 35-46 record as Chicago?s head coach from 1999-2003.

After Detroit lost 27-7 to Atlanta on Thanksgiving to fall to 4-7, reports swirled that the team was considering firing Mariucci. When Mariucci was not dismissed during the weekend, some thought his job was safe for the final five games of the regular season.

?I was angry after that game,? Millen said. ?It was disturbing to watch and I didn?t want to make a decision based on anger. We wanted to take our time, go through it logically, and think everything through.?

The Lions have lost four of five games since a solid start put them atop the NFC North with the Chicago Bears. The team has collapsed on and off the field with players failing to produce and some bickering with one another and questioning the coaches? game plans.

Offensive tackle Jeff Backus said players were not notified of the firing until a previously scheduled team meeting was held Monday night.

?Something had to give, I guess,? Backus told The Associated Press. ?It?s not my job to judge whether Mariucci did a good job or bad job, but we?re in a bottom-line business and our bottom line hasn?t been very good.?

Mariucci has more than two years remaining on the $25 million contract he signed in 2003. The Michigan native came to the Lions from San Francisco, where he was fired with a 60-43 record over six seasons.

Mariucci was cut some slack in the past because the team he inherited was crafted by Millen, but expectations were high heading into his third season.

?If we win 10 or 11 ballgames and make the playoffs, it would make us happy and make the fans happy,? Mariucci said before the season.

The Lions? porous offensive line has added to their passing- and running-game woes while a decent defense has been hampered by being on the field too long, and by injuries.

Millen, who was fined $200,000 by the NFL because he didn?t follow the NFL?s minority hiring policy when he hired Mariucci, said he would follow league guidelines when he searches for a permanent coach.

Jauron, Detroit?s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, was fired in 2003 after four losing seasons in five years with the Bears. He was selected as NFL coach of the year during his lone winning season in Chicago.

Dude, I?m not saying it wasn?t a dick move. I just don?t think it was as bad as what TO said, if you look at it in the context of things:

Bly made those comments in frustration because his team is losing and their head coach got fired mid-season.

T.O made his comments because he wanted more money, and it wasn?t a one time thing he did it again mid season.

Dood, gimme a break! And then when he apologized yesterday, he said he apoligizes to his team mates. But only for causing a distraction and having them deal with the B.S. questions about this, NOT for throwing Harrington under the bus. He also did not apologize to Harrington for the comments nor acknowledged it was a dick move.

But, Bly also said " we are all at fault" then he went on and called out Joey... I think what he said was valid. I agree he shouldn't have done it in public.

Yeah but you don't sell out your teammate like that. You don't empty your trash in public streets like that man. Its just classless. It is the same thing Owens did. But Owens never even came close to saying the shyt Bly said.

T.O. called out McNabb, who?s consistently proven himself on the field, More importantly he?s been a winner. Where as Bly called out Harrington, who?s has been a complete failure. Harrington hasn?t done anything since he?s been in the league, and BLY was defending Mariucci

How so TOK?

Nobody's questioning that. But you can't say that Bly's comments are not in the same league as T.O.'s. Actually, I think they're worse that Owen's!

TOK: I think the Haraam Bastds. need to hire Marriucci. At least he would know when to yank Harrington for more suitable Qbs that wouldnt score up paltry 3.5's.

Bly had a valid point, he?s defending his coach, and I?m sure their are others that are thinking exactly the same thing. Plus, Harrington is getting the big bucks and was supposed to resurrect the team. He's a wash, plus everyone knows he's a wash. But, to be honest a lot of the fault lies with Millen, he really screwed the pooch with that organization, and he should just go back to being a TV analyst.

This is the first time Bly has said anything, let's give him as many chances as TO got before the fines and deactivation start :P .. plus, it's not the Eagles' call, it's Motown.

I blame Marriucci for not sticking to one QB. You can't expect an offense to gel when every other week there is a QB change. This was clearly not the job for him. They need a defensive minded coach and for sure, Millen should have been gone WAY before Mooch!!!!!!!!

Harrington didn't lose all those games by himself...if you ask me Garcia did his part as well as the other non playin guys on that team...they'd all be praisin him if their record was different...damned if you do damned if you don't...instead of pointin fingers Bly should just shut up...the team sucked before Steve got there...someone should fire Millen...

In my opinion, this was worse than anything T.O. ever said. Bly should be fined for conduct detrimental to the team for sure!
