Dune

I was interested in people's thoughts on the Dune novels- meaning the original 6 by Frank Herbert, and not the lame prequels written by his son and Anderson. I first read the original Dune several years ago, and only recently (in the past 2 years) read the others, and I think they're a great set of science fiction literature. Sure, they each have some low points and a strange premise, but make up for what they lack in characterization, plot, and just great story-telling. And the first novel is definitely my favorite.

I was really into the first 3. The last 3 were real odd and seemed to delve more into Herbert's sexually perverse desires than anything else. They dragged on and on about nothing in particular.......

I did read one of the son's novels, the one with young Ledo and the revolution of Ix. Can't remember the name, "House Harkonnen"? Something like that. It wasn't so bad, then again, I never read anything else by young Brian after that so it probably wasn't all that good. For me, those first 3 blew me away, too bad he didn't quit after that - go out on a high note like Castanza......

Great books! Although I wish Frank would have written novels just about the Butlerian Jihad, the Navigators Guild, and the Bene Gesserit.
