Ego-Self-Esteem Connections
Is there a way to safely slice away the Ego from Self-esteem,so that if the Ego gets hurt the person's self-esteem isnt effected so that their thinking performance remains unchanged or if changed then for the better

Sooo.. can you give an example where your ego was hurt, but not your self-esteem? Or was your question a purely intellectual exercise with no direct implications for anything going on in your real life?
I may not know enough to answer your question. Good night for now, going to bed.
But i must add more to the end to it, in both spiritual or intelectual path you might find people who will milk you for their personal benifit without caring the fact how its effecting you mentally or spirtually as long as their desires get fulfilled P:
hehe. I dont know how you got on to Nafs and impulses, but I'm guilty too, of leaving the topic at hand and just writing away! I do that often and thats OK.
Well, in my own belief, I dont agree we have a bad nafs, or an evil side. All of our parts are good. If you've wanted to kill someone etc, or harm them, thats your rage. If people do bad things to us then we can feel angry at them - its normal. The important thing is, how we deal with those feelings. An actual serial killer has no healthy sense of shame or guilt. Its that in a civilian that makes him stop from actually doing what he's thinking (killing or harming others).
We have an unconcious part that drives? Yea thats true, we have childhood memories, issues, emotions and all those things which we learnt back then and still do them in our adult life. Our ways of thinking were learnt well back when we were small. Its hard to change them, but not impossible.
Thats true too, we have to find our own way that works for us. Since every human being is unique, they have a unique set of problems and thus, a unique set of solutions - I realized this very recently. I used to think there was a Holy grail for everyone, but its not like that.
It was actually liberating for me to realize this and I'm glad I realized it.
Frued was interesting. He attributed EVERYTHING to hidden sexual desires, did'nt he? Like he'd say if the Washing Machine isnt working, its because of the owner's repressed sexual desires. lol. Just kidding.
I mean yea, I think he attributed the hidden/repressed sexual desires to the cause of a lot of problems, and I dont agree.
I seem to think that low self-esteem is the main cause of all problems we have - except when the Cable internet doesnt work. In THAT case, we have to call the cable guy.
Ummmmmmm. Yea. Low self-esteem in my opinion, is the cause of all problems. I'm reading Dr. Nathaniel's book "Honouring the self". Its very nice, so well written and makes sense.
Hopefully the original poster, Masked Stranger will clarify his question in this thread when they feel like.
Your model of ego, superego and the id - thats Frued, I just searched the internet since I didnt know what super ego was. Call me brave but I challenge Frued's model and question it. I'm reading a book on self esteem nowdays and the author Dr. Nathaniel (wonderful guy) pointed out an inaccuracy on something that Frued said. It wasnt ego - but the point is Frued is questionable, not universally true.
I like to talk in simple terms. I dont know these terms, I mean who says his model is correct? It just may be one way of explaining the observed.
You say if the child said "daddy I hate you". Then a mentally healthy dad's response would not be "I know".
You can bet on this! If you say "I know" to your child like this, how can you have evolved as a person? I think the better mentally healthy response would be "And why is that, dear?"
That is, the father would respond puzzled and want to know why his son hates his daddy.
Ji - so.. "I know" is not the path to evolution of the person in this case. Dont you agree? I mean, dont you agree that "I know" is not the best answer? Without any question - "I know" is not a positive response in this case.
Coming back, I cant think of any situation where the ego is hurt but the self-esteem remains intact.

__==_Masked stranger___===____, my friend, are you using Fruedian terms? I dont understand them and refuse to. I mean, how do we know they're the best model to describe human psychology?
If you've used Fruedian or any other terms, is it possible to rephrase your question using simpler terms?
Good questions, keep up coming. I think I'm gonna enjoy talking with you guys. Lets hope the reverse is true too :D
Masked Stranger: I dont understand the difference between the Ego and the self-esteem. Would you care to educate me ?
Can you give examples of situations where you think your Ego is being hurt ? Also give example of a situation where the ego was hurt, but you were able to protect your self-esteem.
From what I know, if you let your Ego to be hurt, you have allowed your self-esteem to get hurt too. How can your esteem not get your when your ego is hurt? I think they're connected.
