Elusive Peace: Israel and the Palestinians

I got to see this BBC documentary on PBS last night and I must say it was an excellent piece of work.

It portrayed the conflict from Bill Clinton's efforts to the present day.

Personally I think the documentary was objective and fair to both sides. There were politicians from all sides that had let people down. Three people I really felt sorry for were Bill Clinton, Abu Mazen, Alistair Crooke.

To me it seemed Bill Clinton had put every effort into finding a solution that would be acceptable to both sides and then having the Israeli's throw it back in his face as if he had wasted their time.

Abu MAzen was initially appointed Prime Minister by Arafat but had little real power. During negotiations with Israel he was constantly blamed by Israel and the US for not controlling people like Hamas and Islamic Jihad...even though he had no control over the security forces. In the end even some Palestinian people turned against him, which left him with little option but to resign.

Finally Alistair Crooke, the MI6 (British secret service) agent, who worked tirelessly with Hamas commanders in Gaza. He had managed to convince some of them to a cease-fire and miraculously it worked. Even though Israel knew this, they actually went ahead and assassinated a local Hamas commander knowing full well the cease-fire would be over. What was not mentioned in this documentary was that Alistair Crooke was working against the wishes of the British authorities in Jerusalem. The British commission in Israel did not like him and a lot of people in London were annoyed that he had met with Hamas in secret...even though the outcome was very positive.

In the end people from both sides of this conflict tried to throw a spanner in the works...which always resulted in one thing...the death of innocent Palestinian and Israeli civilians.

There is a DVD available on this from PBS.

well, abu mazen when appointed a prime minister, was highly supported by the US and Israel. they wanted him...and even mentioned many tiames that they won't deal with palestinians unless he's in power. however, arafat wanted to prove that Abu mazen cannot handle it. so he tried to weaken abu mazen in amny indirect ways and through many internal conflicts directly and indirectly. and this was one of the major reasons for abu mazens resignation then.
