Oh well......this post is not from the news, its someone I know who was there and the point is not to focus on shortcomings but it stresses the fact that help is needed.
And thats the message i derive from the news that i actually have to search for , who in USA is interested in bashin the Pakistan army or government?...they simply dont care. But many seem to care about the people suffering there.

there are some JE's up in my profile.

but in defense of the government and army - please understand that the Media does sensationalizes. i know that our rulers are the most corrupt and will embezzle the funds that will and are pouring in. but at the moment the efforts have not been slow nor were they negligent.

its very easy to criticize and we all know controversy sells better than good news.

how many of u would have turned to the channels and keenly watched if they kept saying that all help is going and our people are doing a great job.

i also know and realize that negative publicity will generate more forgein funds that will eventually end up in private swiss accounts.

but still i would like to say that in general people of pakistan really came together and stuck like glue and we are really proud to have been able to handle a situation that could have escalated into a worse tragedy.

natural diseasters are killers and claim many many lives and leave devastation that is mmonumental.

this is not a time to raise fingers and play politics - let that be the game of the professionals.

now is the time to plan and help our country and make it stronger.

Sorry di dnot mean to undermine efforts of Karachites.
I said not aware of the extent...I might be mistaken but
people i talked to were focussed on all the good thats been done ( which i am sure they did) but within the week people were going about their business saying things are under control and what a terrific job the govt is doing wheras the news i get here showed a very different picture. I do know that many youngsters walked to Balakot from Karachi, worked day and night with PAF , that the city ran out of essentials, medical supplies coz people had donated sent so much.

And you being an eye-witness and had the opportunity to help, we would love to hear more from you Virgogirl.
Can you please enlighten us with a JE entry?????

iman i am from Karachi and have been up to the northern areas as a volunteer.

to say that khi is not aware is absolutely cr@p. more than 60% of the relief aid, medical assistance, man power, equipment, and even funds have come from Karachi alone.

i went as a surgical trainee, but there were thousands of medical students and non medical personnel who went to just be a hand at any work they could do.

And Bottlerocket, I am told that in Karachi there were camps where they were training people for psychological
counselling, like a crash course to deal with the grief and post traumatic stress disorder that most of these people will be living with.

I am sure there must be many, many ways to help.
Try contacting the Aga Khan Univ website or WHO
if you want to be part of the process.
I thought one thing Pakistan did not lack was doctors
but it appears they do or maybe its once again....inadequate utilization of resources.

I am in a stupid visa trap at the moment and thats
why just spreading the word and trying to encourage those who can go.

after seeing this post from u on the physicians village, i then received this as an email from a list serve of muslim professionals in the area. they also didn't give his details. i don't know if he is a physician. regardless, i thought it shoudl be shared since it's first hand account apparently, and it gives a moving touch for all of us relatively insulated from it.

People in cities like Karachi also dont seem to realize the extent of ongoing misery. I suppose they see
news prsented with rose colored glasses as usual
focusing on heroism of our armed forces ( and seems
most did an awsome job). Everytime i call home
they dont seem to be on the same page and then try tell me I am getting biased by the lopsided coverage in the american media. And I am like ......who is interested in bashin paki govt at this time,
thats the ONLY way the world finds out the ongoing horrors and that they need help and that our govt does not have the capacity to deal with this.

I'm starting to think the isolated survivors still have no idea to what extent their countryside has been devastated.

From what I know PAF has been very active from the beginning as my sister was working with some very dedicated people there. The people in Pakistan overall
have been very generous, there were many youngsters i know who took it upon themselves to walk to Balakot in initial days with food and medicines.

But apart from geography, landslides and bad weather lack of communication , good leadership and organization in my view adds to the chaos there. Then I read about politicians trying to cut deals at the donation centers. Sometimes helicopters with aid couldnt land
as people would be standing in mobs right below which
would mean they would get crushed if supplies were thrown at them, or attack the suppliers if what they had wasnt enough and if the pilots dint find optimum conditions to land/download they moved on as they had limited fuel to accomodate more supplies....and i assume
leaving behind a frustrated, angry mob. The same limitations apply to picking the injured and those offering services probably cannot reassure and say
someone will come back to help because they dont know that.

It depends what tv networks you're viewing (see the NY Times article www3.naseeb.com aid=108483).

From everything that I have been reading, the behaviour of individual Pakistanis hasn't been apathetic at all. I think that observation is off course. Just look at Karachi or Lahore Metroblogs and the countless blogs and Web sites that have sprung up to marshall support and resources. And the degree of volunteering has been very high. The armed forces, on the other hand, can be faulted for what was a poor response at the beginning. It took them far too long to mobilize.

I think this e-mail is bang on and supports the current Vibe article observations.

Can anyone who views Pakistani television verify what I have heard from friends that this earthquake is being reported by Pakistani news networks with a somewhat low-key urgency?

For example, had such an earthquake hit L.A. it would be the lead story for months with on-site newscasts ad nauseum.

If so, then what can it be that explains such apathetic behaviour? Infrastructure, economy, geography . . . ?

I think in the end, Pakistani's are just not very charitable nor giving people. My only supporting observation is that just during good times alone the poor and destitute are forsaken and forgotten by all except the rare few like the Edhi Foundation.
