Event: Oct. 1 --- China & Islam

salams everyone,

As you might well know, this weekend there is a
groundbreaking event:

"Seek Wisdom Even Unto China: Celebrating 1400 Years
of Muslim-Chinese Heritage" being hosted at Isabel
Bader Theatre, (93 Charles Street), in Downtown
Toronto, by Ihya Foundation and the Students'
Administrative Council at the University of Toronto
and is co-sponsored by a host of Muslim, Chinese
and student organizations.

I am emailing you because I am encouraging you to come
out and participate in this celebration of diversity
and culture in Islam.

Why China?
China has announced this to be the 600th Year
Anniversary of the Voyages of Admiral Zheng He, who
inspired the "Arabian Nights" tales of "Sindbad
the Sailor". Zheng He was ethnically from the "Hui
Hui", and if you've heard Dr. Umar Faruq Abdallah of
Nawawi Foundation speak on the subject, you will
know that the Hui Hui are descendants of Muslims who
came to China inspired by the Prophetic exhortation
"Seek wisdom, even unto China".

Recently, a body of academics and scholars have begun
to unearth a wealth of information about Zheng He.
Though little is known about his life outside of his
grand expeditions, even within China, there is now
evidence to suggest that Zheng He arrived in well
before Columbus and other explorers. Gavin Menzies, in
his bestselling book "1421: The Year China Discovered
America" argues exactly this. In March 2006 Random
House will release "The Island of Seven Cities" by
Professor Paul Chiasson, which chronicles the
remarkable discovery of a Chinese fort in P.E.I.
constructed many years before 1492, the year
Christopher Columbus arrived in the Caribbean.

Zheng He's story is but one example of the rich
heritage that Islam and
China share. Inspired by this story, this event seeks
to explore many
dimensions of that heritage, from history to art,
music and culture.

We will have a master Chinese-Arabic Calligrapher,
Haji Noor Deen Mi Guangjiang, and an internationally
acclaimed photographer, Abdul-Adheem Peter Sanders,
giving us a further glimpse into the relationship
between Islam and China. I am confident that you will
enjoy the experience immensely.
