Ever Experience Any Hate, Discrimination or Racism in School or on Campus?

I am a participant on an Academic Community Roundtable in a conference entitled "Conference Against Hate and Racial
Discrimination" held in Ottawa on May 8-9. The subtitle of this conference is "Toward Understanding and Harmony".

I'd like to be able to adequately represent our experiences, so what I'd like to learn (confidentiality applies) from people on naseeb is the following:

1) have you ever experienced any form of hate, discrimination or racism in school or on campus?

2) do you have any suggestions of how to eradicate or prevent such occurrences from happening again?

3) what has worked, or hasn't, on your campuses?

4) any other info you can provide.

Nadia, as much as i would love to write in this VE, i am not going to do so, as i will have to copy and paste about 200 pages of my so far written book. An autobiography, if gets published, will be by an anonymous writter as that all that i have trailing behind. :o)

i dont care how bad it gets. you should never hide the fact that you are a muslim.

:-O i'm sorry, i clicked on a big X wondering why it was only beside my comment and no one else's and accidentally deleted it!! (yes, i'm tired and have noted that random clicking is not a good idea) now i don't remember what i wrote exactly :-S well i wanted to thank everyone for their helpful input regardless of whether they are from Canada/UK/US. even though the plan we are attempting to develop is initially for Ottawa, other cities in canada, eg toronto, vancouver, montreal etc. (and then internationally) may use this plan as a template pending its success. i did notice you are from toronto aangil - thanks!

Actually my experience is from Canada, I live in Toronto.

It's sad when you have to hide that you are a muslim from others.

I haven't experienced discrimination or racism. However, as an immigrant I came across substaitial lack of knowldge and familiarity on part of local population. I and other immigrants have a wealth of knowdge and experience from our work and education back home. However, locals were totally unaware of such things and the greatest disadvantage of such lack of knowdge was in the job market where it was hard to find a decent job despite having education from local universities and several years of work experience from back home and even here.
