QUESTION: A COMMENT WAS MADE BY THE EUROPEAN, THAT ITS OK TO INSULT ISLAM BUT ITS NOT OK TO INSULT THE PROPHET???

beside trades, and married each other...

i dont teach at soas. i was an undergrad there. yes they have lots of course on central asia.

Have you read Samarkand by Amin Maalouf? I heard of the x thing from there. I thought '0' was formulated by Arabs but the rest of the numbers were Indic.

Another question considering your a teacher at SOAS: do you guys teach anything on Central Asia?

i think saying that the kaaba is the centre of the world, has great symbolic value.

my shaykh used to point to his atlas and say: "look, akkas. the kaaba is in the centre of all that landmass. so it should be the centre of a muslims consciousness. but madina is right above it, but towards the left. it represents the heart."

just as loving of Allah should be at the centre of our taqwa, so loving his prophet should be at the heart of our being muslims.

Sahadat --- yes, i should have also said that. in fact the european renaissance would not have happened had it not been for the great translation movement that was occuring in baghdad and cordova in the 9th/10th centuries. and it wouldnt be an exaggeration to say that the christian reformation was also helped along by the muslims. (the ottomans funded the anti-catholic efforts as a way of undermining the holy roman empire, whose borders they were besieging.) interesting fact i stumbled across whilst studying for a history essay. ph and i think they're called arabic numerals because the zero was brought to europe by arabic-speaking mathematicians (who were probably jewish anyway).

another interesting fact: the mathematical symbol for the unknown, "x", comes from the works of the poet-philosopher-mathematician-astr onomer, Omar Khayyam. in his books he used the arabic word shay' to represent the unknown value. (it means "a thing" in arabic.) when his books were translated into spanish, mathematicians transliterated the word as xay which was later abbreviated to x.

Sky, why are they called Arabic numerals then? I remember reading zero was an Indian invention (and very wound up in the very mathematical Hindu worldview) but why are they so named then? To give Muslim scientists their due, they are the ones who brought much of Greek writing to the West. Most scholars in Europe learnt their Greek basics from Arabic texts!

actually, the black stone was carried off by rebel muslims during the early 8th century. the kaaba was beseiged by two factions of muslims. one of these factions (who wanted the caliph to resign) carried off the black stone to their mianhold in the eastern part of the arabian peninsula. it is all part of the struggle between the sunni and shi'a muslims.

the arabs did not invent numerals. in fact the zero (one of the greatest mathematical inventions ever) was an indian invention. the muslim scientists built upon what the greeks and romans had already discovered.

MY UNCLE IS MARRIED TO AN AHMADI WOMAN, HER SON RECENTLY HAS BECOME SUNNI AND HAS CONVERTED BACK TO SUNNI,

I PERSONALLY HAVE NOTHING AGAINST AHMADI PEOPLE, BUT I READ THEY VERSION OF THE QURAN AND COMPARED IT TO OUT OWN, CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO IT AND I CAN PROVE THIS TO ANY AHMADI PERSON THAT THE FAITH THEY ARE FOLLOWING IS INCORRECT!!

The top of the Earth is the north pole and the bottom the south pole. The line midway is the equator - is that where the Kaaba is situated? But that's not very impresseive - many sites lie on the equator... Don't think this one pans out - but it doesn't matter! The point is not to be impressed by the name of Allah in a fruit or other such fanciful distractions - the faith alone is impressive enough.

I remember having read a book about Signs before Judgement Day. It said that one of the Signs was that the desert will become green. Isn't it happening in Dubai?
And Allah knows best.

Salaam ML. Someone has already told me that the Kaaba was in the center of the earth.
But when I asked him how he could define the center of the earth as it is round he couldn't answer.
