Fair & Lovely- Creme that will make you Beautiful

In almost all cultures spanning all continents, the theory of relativity is the fairer your skin, the prettier you are. This applies to both genders though the buzz is around the female. In some cultures, elder relatives can be brutal about sharing their opionion on the person's beauty a.k.a. fair complexion. Can people share their experiences on how they were made to feel and whether this prejudice did skew their outlook on beauty?

There was an ad in Pakistan for this creme which basically was a testimonial of a girl who ONLY after using the cream to make her skin lighter, got many proposals and lived happily ever after.

I agree with you there on the looks department Irfani...they are not every thing...at the end complexion matters less then what the person is from within.

Soph- I agree. I think it is unfair when people criticize others taste/preferences. Some of the attraction is innate others a choice. For example, despite my neutral disposition on colour of skin, if someone says to me they don't like him or her because of the colour, I don't say anything, it is their choice. Story: My mother's friend set me up for a date. I met her and she was very educated, great career, attractive, well-mannered. My mother was pushing me to pursue. I told her that something was missing (stimulating conversation, passion). I said to her she seemed wonderful, that I would recommend any man to meet her, but she is not for me. My mother said "tum bahot pagal ho". Next stop the mental ward.

Baldness, shortness, darkness, pot-belly-ness...yucky to all of the above :( Again, this is merely my own opinion in what I desire or don't desire; it is not reflective of how most or other women necessarily think. At the same token, I feel that it is immensely important for a person to desire something that he/she himself/herself can provide for the other person in terms of qualities and characterisitcs (physical and non-physical). For example, if you are a skinny stick guy, very short, bald, smelly, wear thick-framed glasses, have yellow teeth, a goofy horsey laugh, and bad dress sense, do NOT ask for a hoor-pari (fairy) and vice versa.

Staj- you did not mention the hot man/unattracive girl scenario. Soph- appreciate your honesty. I was going to say that I have heard women, been told my women that they are very unattracted to baldness, shortness, pot belly, skin colour. Some dislike one, some or all of the above. Women have every right to be just as picky to physical appearances if they want to.

Sophisty: Also attraction or being attracted to someone is very subjective. Everyone has their own perception. For me, personally, I am attracted to men that are confidence, smart, sexy, takes care of themselves and definitely have charisma. Looks and all fade eventually...

Sophisty: Hon, what I said was: " I see lots of good looking women with ugly men or average men. And I always see the HOT men with HOT women..I just dont get that" Thats my experience...so I am not generalizing..please reread my comments :)

Stajani: I think it's a morbid generalization; I mean personally, I have seen hot couples where both people are hot and also couples where one of the two is hot and the other is not at all. As for men being visual beings...very true indeed...but who is to say that women aren't either? Heck, even I am to a good extent; I need to be with a physically appleaing man, easy on the eyes :) It may not be the 'politically correct' thing to say, but it is the darned truth!

There should be a point system... Weight, height, color, hair etc etc lol... so someone could lose out on color, but make it up on height :) Good idea????

Staj- I have seen attractive men with what the general census would say is unattractive women. Sorry to hear about the post 9/11 discrimination.

Irfani, FON and SOphisty: Weight is seriously a major issue in our desi community. Overweight people do definitely have trouble finding a guy or a gal to get married to. Mainly men are superficial but thats just how they are made. Men are visual and they are much into physical appearances initially while women look for something deeper initially. I see lots of good looking women with ugly men or average men. And I always see the HOT men with HOT women..I just dont get that. You know what sucks even more, that desi people notice each and everything you do. If you even put on one pound or look a little plump, they notice that and surely will point it out to you. When you are with non desi people, they dont really care too much about stuff like this. As far as color goes, I have experienced discrimination more after 9/11. Since we are desi, they automatically assume that we are terrorist.

Pathetic! I'm sure there are genuine guys out there who don't marry just to win over a green card but how the heck do you really know for a fact? It's difficult to discern. I stay clear of that road as much as possible!

IRFANI yaar its pretty common over here...and not only in my community but i would have thought it's pretty much the same in every desi community....unfortunately people in both pakland and india seem to think the grass is greener over here....there's a guy from india currently staying over at my parents who's a friend of the family....he's adamant that he wants to live in the UK and is prepared to do ALMOST ANYTHING to stay here!

FON- is that true about overweight women having to go to Pak to find a bloke? Does the Green card compensate for this? I'm disgusted. Is this prevalent in the UK?

Freak- I did not say overweightness is not insulted. I just said colour insults I believe are more brutal or frequent. In a nutshell (low calorie), I think colour insults RELATIVE to weight is more. I could be wrong.

FON: I agree with you on the weight issue. Even overweight girls in my community are still single for no reason other than that they are overweight, they admit it themselves. My parents are mash'allah adorable...both but especially my dad is big on his girls (my mom and sisters) looking bad in any way, shape, or form. God forbit if we eat something out of line, stop exercising for a day or two, or our hair looks like the roots are coming out...basically anything...hehehe...he'll let us know! And I love him for it because if our own parents don't keep us in line, who the heck will? My parents' thinking is, you need to look healthy all the time, before marriage AND after marriage. I agree!!! You have to look hot when you're single and in marriage for your dearest hubby! But that's just my two cents on the issue.

i think i'll have to disagree IRFANI...from what i have witnessed around me (friends and family, especially within the desi culture)....those who are over weight do get a very hard time....not to mention those that are deemed obese.....in my own community all the gals who were and are still fairly over weight have had to resort to going to india/pakland to get married since apparently the guys over there aren't too fussed....as long as they get the green card to stay over here.
