what about stocks with high amounts of debt? conglomerates that own things like playboy? halal or haram?

Go to askimam.org and look under the "money matters" category. You can also invest your money in the Amana Mutual Fund, which has its own Shura council that helps screen out companies with a lot of debt and companies that are associated with alcohol, pork, etc.
