Female Imams and Mixed Congregations

Should women lead prayers and give khutbahs like men?

Should congregational prayers separate the sexes or not?

discuss

I say YES on both counts!

Oooh, my bad Mstic_L.. please forgive me. I was mixed up b/w St. Augustine and St. Thomas for some reason. Well said, even if you'd said it about St. Augustine. St. Thomas Aquinas is great, and I have noticed a strangely attractive energy around people of his missions, of which I have seen two. (Saw the same among the Fransiscan Friars, who I had the pleasure of bumping into in NYC this St. Patricks day, as I was wearing my green turban about to get on a flight.-)

I agree shazia. Superman, not sure what you are refering to. I do know some of his life, yes. What aspect would make me not think something he said about morality true/good? From what I know, his life wasn't all that bad - and he is considered a saint and a great philosopher by many... but even if he had a horribly sinful life, that does not take away from the validity of what he said. Truth is found everywhere and she not be rejected simply because it has a poor messenger.

Shazia04: No need to wait for them to make the leap rather make the leap yourself.

Toronto, Canada is a light for all nations in that we have mixed congregations with female and gay imams for the past two years now.

Mystic luv, do you know what make Thomas Aquinas a saint? Do you know the path he followed, I mean? (You might question that statement when you discover what _he_ himself did when he was that man..)

Mystic - true. It's all about balance isn't it? Yin and yang, good and evil, light and dark etc. Temptation and sin is the 'dark' side of morality - and the two go hand in hand

Impossible because there is a part of me that believes the garbage i learned while growing up, and that is reinforced constantly. I know it's garbage because i believe we do have the freedom and STRENGTH of faith to pray with a pure heart regardless of where and next to whom. But at the same time, I think of the way that muslim men and women behave at the moment - of men groping women and feeling this is acceptable behaviour, or women who bitch with other women about someone not wearing hijaab. The way our society is now I think it's a big big step to ask them to leap - but it should be the goal. Basically, there are far too many pervs to make it viable at the moment

How about shoulder to shoulder?

Aquinas said that "a man alone on an island is not a moral man." Morality REQUIRES tempation and choice... it lives off of freedom of the will to chose x instead of y. i'd personally prefer people cover their sexual parts and be modest out of respect, but if they don;t, that is ok too. I'd like to think that my faith and dedication are strong enough to God that even if a hot naked man was parading around in a mosque, that I wouldn't be having sexual thoughts or looking and I'd be praying, etc.

i know nothing of sharia, hadith, the Quran, etc. Most of what i know is Catholic-oriented and even then i am no expert. However, my opinion is this: Who cares?! What's important is that your prayers are pure and you are educating correctly in your khutbahs. As a Catholic I heard all the freakin time about women being priests, women leading the mass, women doin the sacraments, women giving the homily (like a khutbah) etc... none of which they can do according to Canon Law (like sharia). Even nuns can't do any of that. At first, women and men were seperated and there WAS a partition. then they were mixed. first the priest had his back to us, now he faces the congregation. very recently it became "ok" to go to mass in jeens or a short sleaved t-shirt or even showing clevage... and honestly i dont care about any of it... because what is important is serving God. I go to mass or the mosque to pray and to (inshaAllah) learn... not to socialize, not to gossip, etc.

Yes women should be able to lead prayer and give khutbahs and congregational prayers should not have to seperate the sexes. Most of the people who show up to prayer are modestly dressed, so I really don't see a problem with not seperating them.

If i can break up the personal party you two are having, I agree with Ertw in the way that men and women would be in the same room but pray seperately - was mulling it over in my head for mixed prayers but i've obviously been brainwashed far too much and it seems impossible to comprehend in my mind.

Hey Charming Fella, how are ya? It's been while ;) Basically I said men and women can be in the same room praying. I'm not sure about the men actually leading the full prayer-something i'm just not mentally used to yet... She can give khutbahs' too-thats just like giving a public speech.

So you say YES to women leading prayers! ... But you also say YES to congregatioanl prayers should be seperate, which kind contradicts the first point ... unless the person leading the prayer is either a hermaphrodite or androgenous, in which case I'm even more confused! Fozia, beautiful, gorgeous intelligent FOZIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. howyoudoing?

I say yes too on both counts. I don't think men have a monopoly on piety and prayers are prayer - where we are there to worship

Have no firm opinion on the women leading prayers.
I think it's perfect alright for a women to give a Khutbah. I don't see any harm in a mixed prayer with men praying on one side and women on the other (not behind) with no partition.
