Final list of candidates displayed; election symbols allotted
KARACHI: The election campaign for the local body elections, 2005, will be now visible in Karachi after the final list of eligible candidates with their symbols to contest elections in 11 of 23 districts of Sindh.
The final lists with symbols have been displayed by some returning officers and some of them have yet to be displayed, the delay having occurred because of some typographical errors . The withdrawal of candidature ended Saturday midnight, provincial election commission officials said. The process was to have been completed by Saturday evening.
The eligible candidates were seen scrutinizing the lists with their names at the city courts with those dropped by the returning officer visibly disappointed.
Businesses of painters and poster designers have registered a sudden boom as many candidates have started to wall chalkings to advertise their corner meetings.
The polling in 11 zones is scheduled in the first phase on August 18, 2005.
Returning officers of the remaining 12 districts, where polling will be held in the second phase on August 25, continued to receive objections against acceptance/rejection of nomination papers on Friday whereas the papers will undergo a scrutiny on Saturday and Sunday(July 31).
Lobbying within the political circles for the candidates, supported by their parties, continues for making seat adjustments, and some of them succeeded to persuade like- minded candidates to withdraw.
Election watchers in Karachi see a direct and tough contest between candidates of Haq Parast and Al-Khidamt/Awam Dost groups.
