Flash Gordon @ Sommerset House
FLASH - AHhhhhhh-hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Saviour of the universe
FLASH Ahhhhhhhhh-hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
He'll save every one of us.
I went to watch Flash Gordon last Friday at an open air cinema and I really enjoyed it, even though I got a numb a$$ from sitting on the cobble stones of the court yard of this so called haunted mansion. The rain didnt help and British summers being what they are, it was freezing cold but the atmosphere was Terrific!
Before the film started Brian Blessed, one of the actors in the film, spent 30 minutes ranting on about the film and conveying what seemed like a 1000 messages from the producers, actors, film critics and from Queen (who composed the music for the film), when he finally finished there was a huge cheer form the audience, I think the old chap thought we were cheering him.
Heres a basic out line of the plot:
Flash (Sam Jones, a porn star) and Dale (Melody Anderson), taken hostage by the eccentric Dr Zarkov (Topol) and blasted into space in an effort to save Earth from the unwanted attentions of bald headed psychopath and Ruler of the Universe 'Ming the Merciless' (Max von Sydow). In their fight for survival on the lavish planet of Mongo and it's surrounding moons, Flash must chose between dizzy Earth-girl-next-door Dale, and the exotic and dangerous Princess Aura (Ornella Muti), all the while fleeing Mings troops and desperately seeking allies to help save the universe.
I never actually bothered to watch Flash Gordon right the way through before, it just seemed too cheesy, and I was right but cheesy in a good way. Believe it or not this is one of the most erotic films you can watch with out there actually being and sex in it. At the same time its all very camp. It is full of cheesy lines, one of the worst was when Dale is reunited with Flash and the dialogue goes something like this:
Dale: Flash, your alive! Last time i saw you I wished it was a dream, now this time it feels like a dream but I want it to be real. Oh my, I have so many stories to tell you.
Flash: Save it for our children.
Also a scene just after Flash, Dale and the Nutty Professor are captured, Dale is all dressed up as Ming's concubine and she gets to see Flash all naked, oiled and chained up in a dungeon.
Flash: Dale you look amazing (looks at her in awe)
Dale: Its the eye make up.
There are so many more cheesy lines, but you need to watch the film. I would say its on par with Barbarella, I havent seen it for a while but I'm going to watch it again very soon and we can vote, Barbarella or Flash Gordon.
