Free Will???

I had put this on my Journal Entry but didn't get much input. So lets try this here:

Most muslims believe that human beings exercise free will, but that our destiny is also known by God. Is this a contradiction?

u have a good point, i feel the answer is that allah cannot actually commit us to our afterlife with out a judgement. how can u b sent to heaven or hell 1. with out having actually living your life 2. having a fair trial? i did wonder for a long time what the actual point of exsistance was if allah knew all and everything is predestined, could just bypass it all and not exsist. Allah is fair and just, so we live our lives, have freewill to do as we please with in our ability and are judged fairly for actions we have actually comitted...not just what was forseen by allah.

I'm having a read of that site, interesting so far.

Emma_k: it's actually hUzu. By Allah having the knowledge of our actions before had negates free will. He is not forcing us, but he already knows before a child is born if he'll go to heaven or hell (since he is all knowing) so then why judge if it's already predetermined. Here's an interesting article, you have to be a little open minded to go thru it cause it relies on logic not just faith.

Hazu, i know its difficult to comprehend, and i encourage ur questioning because it is a good thing. I had difficulty understanding it my self many years ago but then it just clicked. If Allah has knowledge how does that restrict our free will? Allah is not interfering in anyway, Allah just had knowledge. Another thing you have to understand for it to make sense is that Allah created man kind, angels, shaitan and the world so we know that he is not governed by the same rules as us. the like is just interesting to read. its amazing how people differ. i'll add more later.

ASIANUK: I understand we have a limitation that we are bound by the fabric of time, but that is something that is there and we can only discuss things with that limitation. We can't just say because we are limited by time and God isn't, then he can give us free will and still be all knowing. Just the idea of willing something and doing it requires "time" to be present. You can not contemplate anything if time was not present. I guess I'm not really looking for an answer for this entry, but more of a food for thought. I don't think there is any real answer out there....... Emma_k: By your statement "we all have free will, but allah has knowledge of all events past and future" ... you might as well have said "we have free will but we don't" :) That's kinda the topic of the entry that by saying God is omniscient you remove the free will from humans. I also looked over the link you provided to the other entry, however most of the poeple on that seem to be talking about something totally tangent to the argument.

we are free to 'will' as we want, God cannot determine this for us..not that he can't but rather won't because of diminished responsibility. God has knowledge of all events because he exists out of the fabric of time, but we are contigent on time.

Factors that exist out of our own bodies is where events can be determined, by God or by someone else. We won't know what may or may not be determined outside of our bodies, but we are still free to will, and act on our own volitions.

We have to distinguish 'free will' from 'free action', so we can will anything we want, but may not be able to actualise what we will.

You said "Yes...as long as the almighty hasn't 'determined' for us what we are going to do...and therefore diminish our moral responsibility." So how do we know what is determined and what isn't?

Allah being omnicient has no bearing on whether we can exercise our will freely. A crude analogy but, we can have knowledge of up to a month in advance on what is going to be on TV. But that doesn't in any way affect what is actually going to be on TV.

Our knowledge of TV events is in no way a comparison to Allah's(SWT) omnicience, but that doesn't negate the analogy.

What you are saying is by Allah(SWT) having knowledge of all events past, present and future, does it in any way limit or force an individual to do otherwise? Is there a logical connection between Allah's(SWT) knowledge and the mind of the individual exercising their will?

Can we still exercise our will? Yes...as long as the almighty hasn't 'determined' for us what we are going to do...and therefore diminish our moral responsibility.

But if Allah knows all then how do we have a choice... if already knows your going to make a mistake... then is it really your mistake???

it's not a matter of beyond human comprehension, but it's a complicated matter whereby you have free will, but at the same time Allah knows all, and at the same time there are still somethings that we don't choose for ourselves, and those are the things that we are not punished nor rewarded for, such as choosing our height or family, etc. please do correct me if i'm wrong.
