Gaskell's Royal Ball in Oakland, Saturday, December 17th
Gaskell's is the largest period ball in the bay area - it happens 6 times a year - in Oakland by Lake Merrit just off 80 (Oak St Exit, heading East to the lake).
The one this saturday evening is a fancy dress ball, so this is an opportunity to go see the thing and wear anything authentic-ish without having to find period clothing. Most people wear the stuff from the the sf opera sale or victorian dresses from ebay. I will be going dressed as an Indian Prince. My turban and a good vest are all the costume I need. Plus dance shoes: suede soles, roughly $100.
In the afternoon in casual dress from 3:45 for 2 1/2 hours they teach all the dances for $10 - sufficient to fake it at the ball itself - its the cheapest and most efficient way to get started on these.
Sorry for the short notice, but the fancy dress event happens every October so if you are curious and may be interested and aren't prepared for this one, then let me know and maybe I'll be able to provide better notice next year.
I'm thinking of going to the class and to the ball itself for an hour or so my way to other things. Unless a compelling reason turns up. If you would like to go in a group, let me know.

If you have ever seen yourself as high society, I say you owe it to yourself to put yourself in the company of your peers, and let the ladies know (if you're a guy) that you're being counted! Vice versa for ladies, but the advantage truly belongs to the guys, as they're the ones who have the pick o' the pack, so to speak. *ahmm* I mean to say that the gentleman is the one who asks the lady. And escorts her to the floor, leads the dance, and brings her back. Such a quintessential _guy_ activity! Almost as good as fishing! *ha!* jk..
I have decided to become a regular at the Period Ball events, the next one coming up on Dec 17th. Same bat time, same bat channel.
