getting a kitty

So i love cats, but i've never had my own. i've actually never had my own pet (except for when my roommate got gerbils last summer). anyways, i plan on getting a kitty when i move, which will be soon inshallah.

so i've been doing research but i wanted to know current cat owner's opinions on what kind of cat to get? where should i get the cat from? should it be old or young? male or female? anything else i should know? i'd love to hear your feedback, advice, and tips.

gracias.

You should definitely get two, they get very lonely.

I should warn you though its a lot of work!

I had four at one time, every morning I went to feed them in their room the little rascals used to scatter all over the house oh my days! I was late to work almost everyday.

thanks for the info MPG. oh one more question. i've also heard that with kittens its sometimes better to get two together (even better when they're siblings). b/c then they have one another to keep each other busy etc. anyone ever do that? get two kitties at once?

Amanii: i would love to get a kitten cuz they're SO cute! :) but i know they need more attention/ play time otherwise they get into mischief. but define being "home alot"? i'll be working a normal 9-5 job, so is that enough?

Thanks y'all for the comments. very helpful. i plan on getting my cat from a shelter, so that is out of the way. and i'm not really concerned about pure breeds vs a regular cat. it sounds like the male cats are friendlier than the female ones. are females more friendly too after they've been "fixed"?

good question. the time has come again for me to adopt one as well, n this is all great advice. i was tryin to decide whether to get a male or female, but was leaning more towards male cuz from my experience, they tend to be friendlier n less snotty, as every1 else has noted. (n amanii, they're fine when they're fixed.) hehe. but take it from me, i know first hand and it's noted in literature, that Siamese cats are the most like dogs, and can be taught easily to perform tricks, such as playing fetch, rolling over, and talking. personally, i luv playful kitties, not snotty, boring ones like fat ol persians. hope that helps.

I volunteer with an awesome shelter and have the CUTEST kitties who need homes, email me and maybe I can help out in terms of what you are looking for!

yup shelter is the way to go unless you know someone who's cat has just had kitties or something. i prefer males coz they do tend to be more friendlier and playful and less snotty (i have a male and female so i know) or you could get one of each! now there's an idea! :)

There are alot of questions. :) Like are you gonna be home most of the time? If you are then you could get a kitten. I prefer short hair cuz then thats less hair all over the place. I think females are better in general cuz once the male is ready to mate damn they are so violent. I don't know if it's different if you get it neutered. I agree with batta in that you should get one from the shelter. I hope you get one soon!

Your first option will be deciding if you want to get a "pure breed" vs. a regular cat. Usually a pure breed will cost money though - I think I paid about $500 for my Abysinnian.

The advantage of a pure breed is that usually you will have an idea of what kind of behaviour the cat will have as an adult. So for example - the abysinnians are supposed to be EXTREMELY active - and my cat has defintely lived up to his breed's reputation - where as the Persians are supposed to me much more laid back.

With a cat of undetermined heritage you will not know what kind of personality that cat will develop. They could turn out to be like the Abysinnians - or more like the Persians. Or somewhere in between.

One more thing - people think cats just need food and water. That's not true. They also need you! I mean - they want company - and many cats don't like it when th eir owners are away for extended periods - so it is a time commitment.
