Ghetto Masjid/Mosque
Okay, I'm not sure about everyone, but I know a lot of people have a "Ghetto Masjid." It might be a great Masjid but it's just not in the right part of town. If you do please tell your story.
in my hometown of Raleigh, NC, we used to pray in a room at Shaw University cos some saudi prince had poured all this money into that university, so they actually had that room named after him...back then, fully 25% of the student body at this historically black college were Middle Eastern. anyway then the masjid was built, sometime around '86, in a "historic neighborhood settled by free black people before the civil war." when our masjid was built, the floor was all concrete, everyone brought their own jaan-namaz, and there were plastic buckets to catch rainwater scattered throughout the musalla...yo it was ghetTO. the bathroom back then somehow always had a lot of mud in it...muslim ppl love to splash water i guess. anyway, the neighborhood is still kinda ghetto, though they've gotten used to the muslims there, but i can't say the masjid's ghetto anymore...there's a new building now with a full hardwood basketball court, a large prayer hall, an actual color scheme, water hoses in every bathroom stall, skylights, a restaurant, a library, an office with nice flat-screen monitors, the whole shebang...
I've never had a ghetto masjid experience. We live in a small town, where the nearest Mosque used to be 50 miles away (in Sac town). Then my dad decided 'hey, let's build one next door'... 7-8 years and 80% complete, it burned to the ground (arson)... now been another 10 years (was rebuilt), and the new peeps running the show been doing some crazy whack stuff...... I wouldn't call it ghetto fabulous, but definately shady.
Last summer we had a man who just got out of jail convert to Islam, dude was a big drug addict, he was an alchoholic and he was homeless. ANYWAY, this guy would always come to Juma namaaz. Always! But dude was always late, coming in after we all had started praying, then he would steal the money out of the donations box! Anyway no one would ever call the cops on him they just started taking the box to the front of the masjid with the Imaam. Dude, stopped comming around and the rest as they say is history... So, that's my ghetto masjid story. *:
