seems like a valid statement. Allah has no human attributes. At the same time though we are allowed to call him He and not allowed to call him "she" becuase that it is not how he referred him to. But if that point is accepted, than I think the debate is pretty much done with

My point was that quran was sent to us in a language we could understand at that time. Arabic is a language that came into being in a patriarchal society so it's not surprising that the pronoun used to describe allah (by himself i suppose) was masculine becuase the masculine pronoun is the dominant pronoun. But in anycase, there's no point in arguing over this. We can't (or shouldn't) attribute any gender to God. Because doing so would imply a duality to allah. Cuz if there's a male allah, then by extention, there must be a female counterpart as well. And we all know that there's only one God.

Raid I dont understand the point. The Quran was revealed by Allah SWT in its exact words by Gibrael. Rasulullah (S) did not add "he" to it, for Allah SWT referred to Himself by it. We should just call him by what He calls himself.

Now to your actual question regarding God's gender...well ofcourse, he is genderless (or at least that's a question we don't have an answer to). Our people get too stuck up on this matter when there are other more pressing issues that need addressing in the muslim world. Issues such as poverty, illiteracy...heck, the state of the ummah is dire. Our society has always been patriarchal so it's not a surprise that the masculine pronoun is the dominant pronoun(the one that you would use for an ambiguous situation). Therefore, it's no surprise that the masculine pronoun is used in the Quran for instances where the gender is unknown.

I speak English, Urdu, Punjabi....hindi..So similar yet so different if your in the different areas. I can and do travel thru both India and Pakistan on my own. I speak well enough that no one will notice that I am from the US..I do business with manufacturers in both India and Pakistan. I had a Pakistani flag on my Jag. How am I forgetting where I am from? I am very open minded. If another system or method will achieve better results I will try it. No reason to hang onto certain customs just to feel like you dont forget where you come from..

Aim is right. Succinctly, Allah never refers to himself using the pronoun "she" so we shouldn't, either. Also, the pronoun "he" in Arabic ("huwa") is also an all-purpose general third person pronoun to be used when gender is unspecified. We might be pressed to use the pronoun "it" in English, rather than "he" but unfortunately, "it" cannot be used for a sentient being, human or divine. We use "he" for Allah because our languages are limited, not because we are ascribing male characteristics to Allah. At least when we use "huwa" in Arabic there is the understanding that the subject is not necessarily "male." But when we use "she" we are saying that the subject IS female, which is clearly wrong.

Rizwan...good question alot of people do not understand this concept. I recently had the opportunity to take a class on aqeedah taught by a wonderful shaykh named yasir qadhi who graduage with a masters in aqeedah from Al Madinah Univ. MashALLAH he is very knowledgeable. In the Aqeedah (Creed)of Islam, there are three major catagories. Ruboobiyyah, Uloohiyya, and Asma wa Sifat. Roobiyyah basically explains that Allah is the Rab (much more meaning than the english word Lord), Uloohiyyah basically discusses that non should be worhipped other than Allah SWT. Asma wa Siffat basically means that we believe in the all the attributes that Allah has described Himself as and we take them literally. If a Muslim were to negate any of these three issues, according to Islam it is considered Shirk. So this question really falls into the topid of Asma wa Sifat. Allah SWT has chosen to reveal His attributes, such as the 99 names and so forth in the Quran and Sunnah. We can not derive his attributes from other than the Quran and Sunnah. You can look up the topic of asma wa sifat and read the thousands of evidences supporting this. But to make short. Since Allah SWT has chosen to refer to Himself by using the masculine term, so we do it as well. If Allah SWT nor the Prophet (S) has ever said "Her" or "She" , then why should we violate that? Do you see where I Am going. If you want me to post support on it being wrong on the basis of asma wa sifat, you can let me know, but i'll let you know now, its ALOT of reading and will be LONG lol.

Now Veloct you here again? It's interesting to see how "conservatives" run from logical discussions. So lets get after it...You can run and hide. Though I am sure there are some intelligent conservatives out there who are not afraid to answer.
