Good deeds take away bad deeds
Allah says: And keep up your prayer in the 2 parts of the day and in the first hours of the night; surely good deeds take away evil deeds.
The schlolars say that the 2 parts of the day and the first hours of the night refer to the 5 compulsary prayers.
This is how the ayah was revealed:
Narrated ibn Mas'ud (R.A): A man kissed a woman and then came to Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) and told him of that. So this divine Revelation was revealed to the prophet (S.A.W): "And perform As-Salat at the 2 ends of the day, and in some hours of the night (5 compulsary prayers). Verily the good deeds remove the evil deeds (small sins). This is a reminder of the mindful." The man said, "Is this instruction for me only?" the Prophet (S.A.W) said, "It is for all those of my followers who encounter a similar situation." Bukhari and Muslim Vol. 6 Hadith No. 209.
Narrated Abu Dhar (R.A.): Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) said to me: Be afraid of Allah and keep your duty to him wherever you may be. And follow up the evil deeds with the good deeds, verily the good deeds remove the evil deeds. And behave with people in a high standard of character. (This hadith is quoted by At-Tirmidhi)
