Great book!

Have you read IRshad Manji's book: "The trouble with Islam Today"?
I didn't expect much from it at first. However as I started reading it, I realised how logical and true her ideas are. I would say I agree with over 90% of her ideas and reflections. I find it took a lot of courage from Manji to write that book. I think it is important not to give up on our faith, religion and culture and just to make it clear to the world that Islam is a peaceful, respectful and open religion.

Thanks Tanveer786- I think the best kutbahs are by soft spoken men. My favorite book is "Conference of the books" by Abu-Fadl. He talks about this point in one chapter. Ps. I don't pop acne- just pimples....

Agree Huzu, tanv: I think the word fundamental is a misnomer- don't you mean extremist? The fundamentals of Islam are really about moderation, tolerance, etc. Tanv, can you send that link to the seminary. What do you think about Zaytuna?

Couldn't agree with you more Tanveer! I feel one of the main problems is that even the educated class of muslims has a very fundamental view of islam. It's kinda been rubbed into us from the start. I saw a documentary called "The House of Saud" not too long ago, and it was quite enlightening. I see now why the "majority" of the muslims have the conservative islamic views. It's amazing how politics and hunger for power has played a role in defining the "standard" muslim. If any of you get a chance to see it, I'd highly recommend it. www.pbs.org

Most of it boils down to the re-opening of Ijtihad....so as to ensure that Islam can cope with the changes that 21st century offers.

What do you guys think? Is there an urgent need to reopen Ijtihad? Is there a widespread stagnation in the ummah today?

I am actually going to get this book. I feel there is REAL problems with the Muslim ummah today. Any moderate view is quickly marginalized. Treatment of women is abhorent!! even in the U.S.

Interesting... I'll see if I can get my hands on that. Is it a long read?
