"Guantanamo: 'Honor Bound to Defend Freedom'" Off broadway play opens in Chi town Feb 7. MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
"Guantanamo: 'Honor Bound to Defend Freedom'" is a British play that originally opened in London to protest the US's abuse of human rights of citizens who were taken to Guantanamo concentration camp. The title of the play ?Honor Bound to Defend Freedom? takes its name from a sign at the entrance to the camp. The play tells the stories of 5 British men detained under questionable pretenses, never told why they were imprisoned and kept there for over two years. Most were eventually released without trials, still with no explanation. The play uses actual testimonials of the prisoners, their letters to their families and the testimonials of their families. The play does a great job showing us how inhuman their treatment is and hence the irony of the sign a the entrance( ?Honor Bound to Defend Freedom?).
A fellow naseeber told me about this play(thanks Amina) and I had a chance to see it this past weekend while visiting DC. The play has been touring the US initially opening in NYC last year, then San Francisco, now Washington DC( last show Dec 11!!!!!). It will move to Chicago from Feb 7-March 26 2006 www.timelinetheatre.com . The play has been getting great reviews and I would highly recommend that if you are in the Chicago area try to check it out.
Before going to see the play I was not that well informed on what has been going on down there but realized now how easy it is for us to tune out to the human rights abuses that OUR government is executing in OUR names. Based on witness accounts from those released there are serious human rights violations that have been commited ( and likely are still happening). Some speculate that treatment of detainees may be worse than the treatment of prisoners at Abu Gharib. Human rights organizations have minal accesss to the camp( and unable to monitor treatment of prisoners), the detainees have no right to lawyers, they are interrogated and tried by military court, not permitted to view the ?classified? evidence used to convict them(including possible death sentence cases), and not permitted to appeal the decision by an outside impartial jury.
It is a very scary thought that the so called ?benchmark/gold standard? of liberal democracy?s (which is supposed to be synonymous with justice, democracy, fair trial and human rights) violates all of those principles in the name of American freedom.
