Hard to Change
What was the hardest thing for you to adjust to after embracing Islam?

It took a lot for me to conclude that doing something that hurt my family, angered them, worried them, went against my parents' wishes, etc., was the right thing to do. Up to that point in my life obeying my parents had always been right and suddenly to do right I had to disobey them and go against them in the strongest possible way - it was hard!
Be certain of this, that the highest aim of creation and its most important result are belief in God. And the most exalted rank in humanity and its highest degree are the knowledge of God contained within belief in God. And the most radiant happiness and sweetest bounty for jinn and human beings are the love of God contained within the knowledge of God. And the purest joy for the human spirit and the sheerest delight for man's heart are the rapture of the spirit contained within the love of God. Indeed, all true happiness, pure joy, sweet bounties, and untroubled pleasure lie in knowledge of God and love of God; they cannot exist without them
I also suggest learning about different religions. The more you know about other religions, the more you know about Islam. After becoming Muslim, I learned more about Christianity then I ever knew being raised Christian. I also read the Torah. It's really good to be able to compare religions with Islam, mostly when giving Dawah.
Belief may produce the pleasures of Paradise in this world . Consider the following single benefit out of hundreds of pleasurable lights. For example, at the very minute you see someone you love dearly in great danger and dying, a doctor who is like both Loqman the Sage and Khidr arrives. Suddenly your friend is restored to life. What great joy you feel. In the same way, belief gives you happiness and joy to the number of the dead whom you love and with whom you are connected. For through the light of belief, millions of people loved by you in the graveyard of the past are suddenly delivered from extinction and death and resurrected before you. They come to life saying, "We did not die, and we shall not die." In place of the numberless pains resulting from those numberless separations, through belief, the innumerable pleasures and joys arising from union and coming to life may be experienced in this world also. Thus, this shows that "Belief is a seed which produces for those who believe the shoots of Paradise together with all its pleasures and properties in this world, and so too will it produce them in the next.
In the opposite side the non believers do not get the benefits and real relief for their souls. And mainly many acq. mental disorders based on this etiology. Thats why in the world like Japan, denmark,Sweden and Holland... most civilised, wealthy and free from every theological rules countries have trouble of depression and depression related main problem suicide.
Mentally illnesses basicly classified as congenital and acquired. And some congenital ones also based some genetical disorders etc.
The congenital mental disorders are accepted as non responsible from the point of Islamic sharia.
But if a person will become depressive,obsessive,manic so on by abusing his/her own soul,mental health by atheistic influences, bad habits like alcoholism-drugs etc., immoral manners accepted as responsible bcs of his/her former life span.
From the point of Islamic sharia if a person will kill somebody when he was drunk he will be punished like a conscious person. Drinking is strictly prohibited from the beginning. In opposition to Sharia western law accepted the drunk period as an extenuating circumstance.

Here is a Hadith from our prophet Pbuh about this:"
The pen does not record the deeds of three persons: the child until the age of puberty; the sleeping person until he wakes up; the insane until he is sane.? (Reported by Ah?mad and at-Tirmidhi.)
Now as far as "sanity" for mental patients goes, I assume it is relative and has perhaps different levels but what happens on the day of judgement is in the hands and knowledge of Allah only, but we know he is the All-Just and All-Merciful.

Babyj is right, Allah Almighty with his mercy will judge people according to what they know and are aware of (Muslims or not). Those who don't know about Islam, or those who have a bad impression of Islam because of what's going on in the world have an excuse but if they die as not Muslims Allah will give them a chance on the day of judgement through a test. When it comes to Hellfire, in a Hadith the prophet peace be upon him asked his companions on whether a mother would throw her new babyborn in the fire, and then he made an analogy that Allah Almighty has much more mercy to humans than this mother to her child and thus those who end up in hellfire must have transgressed outside his mercy to deserve it.
