Has anyone tried the Fartlek training regimen .... does it actually improve running??

Salaams everyone! I;m a recent novice runner in hope of becoming a advanced runner inshaAllah ? Just started running abt 4.5 months ago and finding it really fun! So far its been as far as the treadmill.. but I do hope to take it outdoors soon n get sum of those rays (H)while i'm at it!

I?m trying to build up my stamina and need help. Are there any specific exercises to do to help build up endurance and strength? Does this ?Fartlek? training thingy really work?? I know it?s a funny word but I?ve heard it?s a great training tool used by many advanced runners.

I?m tryin to kick up my speed, get a better cardio workout and tryin to improve my threshold. Anyone got any advice??

thanks
w'salaams! :)

it works---just understand that when you go hard in a fartlek--you're really really going hard, almost all out----if you run 3 miles regularly and then do 1.5 miles for a fartlek, that's great---just b/c it breaks up the monotony, but don't expect or be upset if you don't get to do the regular 3 miles when you do the fartlek. As for shoes, pot SWEARS by asics gel-kayano's---and if they're too expensive, one of the midrange ones. NB are too heavy, saucony---a lot of people swear by them as well but the pot's not a superfan . . .

Cool.... thanks for the pointers. Building up the distance first sounds like a good way to go. i think i was trying to go too fast too far :( ... i even slightly strained my chins twice :- Speaking of shoes ... i've got cross-trainers... they work fine i think ... but i think i'll look into getting actual RUNNING shoes.. hopefully that'll help me out more! Thanks for d advice.

ive been training on running, and the most important thing for me is running with the clock. every run, i aim to shave 3-5 seconds off each half a mile. if youre running 3 miles for example, and can get better 10-15 seconds per run, youre golden. trying working on distance first, get to just being able to run as far as you want, untimed, once youve reached your desire distance, then bring in the clock and work on time. and get good shoes!

Salaams Ghazala :)
Just to let you in on wat Fartlek trainin is : I know it sounds weird ... but no its def NOt a way to run where you're leaving a trail of weird odors behind :) !!! hahahaha

Fartlek is a form of road running or cross country running in which the runner, usually solo, varies the pace significantly during the run. It is usually regarded as an advanced training technique, for the experienced runner who has been using interval training to develop speed and to raise the anaerobic threshold. However, the 'average' runner can also benefit from a simplified form of Fartlek training, to develop self-awareness and to introduce variety into the training program.
