Help!

I'm moving to DC in a few weeks for a new job. The job is in Tysons Corner but I think I'd like to live in DC.

I'm finding how hard it is to find apts that have parking in DC.

Does anyone live in the Tysons Corner/McLean area? Is it really suburban (quiet) or is it ok for a single professional?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Arfa

i live in dc and love it...although my rent is kinda high. I live in NW DC and pay 1215/month (for a 1 bdrm) + 150/month for parking in the garage downstairs. I live a block away from the van ness stop on the metro---this area of dc is nice and fairly quiet, but you still get to enjoy the excitement of living in a city ;-)

Arfa:

For a single person I would say that Tysons is more quiet. You'd be better off in Arlington, or DC if you want to socialize and limit your commute in the morning. If you have a busy schedule, then avoid any place where you have to take a bus to the metro (rather find a place that is within a few min walk of the metro). If you need any more advice, let me know. We could talk about it.

Well tysons area is not bad either, though arlington might be more happening -- but once I have to, I go to georgetown or DC anyway which is not far from tysons...the good thing about tysons is that its very central...it is diverse, but there are more arabs than desis here...and plus, now I have my vested interests in tysons since I just bought a condo in front of tysons II...

thanks guys for all the good advice;

I'm leaning toward Arlington and will actually be heading out there this weekend to check out apartments;

it sounds like there's a cool desi/Muslim community out there and am looking forward to meeting you all once I'm settled in;

I'll have to throw a house warming party;

thanks again....

Arfa, Arlington rocks!
It is very diverse with international restaurants and things to do all over the place. Just be weary of the traffic!!! That is Northern VA/DC/MD's biggest problem. I use to live near Dulles Airport near my job...it was less of a commute,less traffic but it was dead& dull as a doorknob...it had a very "new development + McMansions" feel but with no sidewalks.
There are alot of cool apartments around the Arlington area. I live right off of Lee Highway near Glebe Road.. 5 mins from everything! (including Falls Church, Ballston, Clarendon, Rosslyn, Georgetown,DC and I-66.)
Just watch out for Traffic and high raised parking entrances (my car is broke)! Search Wood Lee Arms Apartments.

If you'll be commuting to Tysons then I dont think living in DC is a viable option since the subway doesnt go to Tysons but stops 2 miles away. It kinda depends on where you're coming from? If you want the city life closest to DC is better (Dupont would be ideal but the parking /commute would be horrible). The best compromise as everyone stated is North Arlington. Also depends on the amount of $$$ you'll be willing to spend. I had a friend live in Rosslyn maps.google.com q=1575+Colonial+Terr,+Arlington,+VA , it worked out great for him. Was a 2 minute drive to the freeway to Tysons and a 10 minute walk to GeorgeTown / 5 minute walk to the subway (metro).

North Arlington is awesome. Ballston,Clarendon, Courthouse all have great apartments and condos and easy access to DC by metro or car. I work in Ballston and i really enjoy the shops and restaurants.
Your commute to tysons will be around 20-30 min. in traffic. Tysons has great apartments, quiet/safe, and great shopping. DC is 20 minutes by car.

laila, i really like the ballston area, but areas called courthouse and clarendon are also very cool. ballston place, courthouse place, and the meridian are some good buildings in those areas. if you have questions about any specific ones, lemme know. i've probably checked them out at some point.

Saadt, if my job was in DC, I would definitely live there. Since my job's in Vienna, I need a car.

My other question re Arlington: is it a diverse/cultural area? That's important to me as well.

arrrggghhhhhh, i hate stereo types of dc. i live in dc. for one, you can bike or walk to places or --gasp take the bus... for two, you don't have to drive as much so you won't need to worry about parallel parking, if you live in the 'burbs you'll be driving alot more and when you come into the city, u have your ca....... actually go live in N.Va, the less people/cars in dc the better for me, hehheeee. ballston is so a.c. (adult contemporary) arlington is becoming less and less fun, i used to like it, but its getting less "wierd" and more cheesecake factory/pottery barn with all that corporate planning. tysons is even worse, soo boring. but if i had the choice i would live in arlington over anywhere else outside of dc. i did live there for a bit years ago. hated having to drive everywhere, and everyone in arlington finds that you don't go to dc much at all, since there are substitutes in arlington for coffee and the like, and parking in dc scares people, but it really isn't that hard in most areas of dc, seriously. of course going to adams morgan at night is rough, but thats why i ride a motorcycle. and the metro is not a far walk from AM too (10-15 min). although suburbanits don't like to walk for more than 5 parking spaces away from the places they go. (i love seeing people circle around to find a space closer to strip mall stores, when theycould have parked and walked from the back of the lot (which is vacant) by the time they find a closer space, sooooo funny, heheh)

Thanks Sobia. I think that's what I'm leaning toward. Another friend suggested the same thing.

How do you like Ballston? Also, any suggestions on good buildings?

laila--i hear you--i'm not great with the parallel parking either. dc will be a pain in that regard. i did what potman suggested and live in the ballston area. it is not in md--its in a part of va called arlington. good luck !
