I would really appriciate you comments :)

Assalamu alaikum Inhsamr,

I will try to answer your question as best as I can, inshaAllah.

To understand any verse from the Quran, we must look at the arabic as opposed to any translation (English, French etc). Allah (SWT) says in Surah Noor, verse 31: ...walyadribna bikhumurihinna ala juyubihinna.. (draw your "Khumur" on your "Jayb" or headcover over your chest).

So, what does the word Khumur mean in arabic? Imam Abu'l Fida ibn Kathir says that Khumur is the plural of Khimar which means something that covers and is what is used to cover the head. The dictionary of classical arabic Aqrab al Mawrid says that the word khimar refers to all such pieces of cloth which are used to cover the head. It is a piece of cloth which is used by women to cover he head.
During the time of the Prophet (SAW), the women used to cover their hair but left their neck and chest uncovered. When the verse was revealed for the women to draw their khimars to cover their chests , they quickly covered the required areas.

Safiyyah, daughter of Shaybah said that Aisha (RA) mentioned that women of Ansar, praised them and said good words about them. She then said that when Surah Nur came down, they took curtains, tore them up and made head covers (veils) out of them. Sunan Abu Dawood book 32 #4089

In a Hadith narrated by Aisha (RA): The Messenger of Allah (SWT) said that Allah does not accept the prayer of a women who has reached puberty unless she wears a khimar. Abu Dawood book 2 #641.

Therefore there is evidence that khimar means head cover.

Now what does jayb mean? The scholars translate this word to be Bosom/Chest. Allah (SWT) also uses the same word in Surah Al-Qasa Ayah 32 "usluk yadaka fii jayb ka takhrur bayda'a" which means "thrust your hands into your chest and it will come out white - referring to a story about Musa A.S.
So the command to draw the khimar to cover the jayb means to take your head covering and cover your chest.

Every Muslim girl will be questioned some time in her life as to why she must where hijab. It must be remembered that everything is done for Allah's pleasure. If He commands it, then it should be done. I am sure that you have heard another opinion that Hijaab is not fard(obligatory) and I personally do not believe it.

Yes, the wives of the prophet (SAW) wore hijaab.

I hope I answered your question. And Of course, Allah knows best.

salaam alaikum...I have the same question as Tayabba...I'm not clear as to where in the quran it says to wear hijab. I'm not trying to be arrogant but where did you get this from : The head cover should be drawn to cover
the hair, neck, and chest.

Also did all of the Prophet's wives wear hijab (pbuh)?

Assalamu alaikum,

Allah says in the Quran:

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard, their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty, except to their husbands, their fathers, husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hand possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense in the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention, to hide their ornaments. And O ye believers! Turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain bliss."

-Surah 24, verse 31

"O Prophet, tell thy wives and daughters and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons' (when abroad). This is most convenient that they should be known and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving , Most Merciful."

-Surah 33, verse 59

The Quran clearly enjoins Muslim men and women to dress and behave modestly. The verses from the Quran contain two injunctions: 1. A woman should not show her beauty except what appears thereof. 2. The head cover should be drawn to cover the hair, neck, and chest.

Islam allows a woman to dress in any style of clothes as long as they are not form fitting. The conditions are:

1. Clothing must cover the entire body with the exception of the face and hands (and some scholars say feet.).

2. The attire should not be form fitting, sheer, or eye-catching as to attract undue attention, or reveal the shape of the body.

3. The clothing can not be similar to male clothing.

4. Clothing must not suggest fame or status.

There are similar requirements for a male believer as well. He should also dress modestly.

The Arabic word 'hijab' comes from 'haajaba', meaning to 'hide or conceal'. Head covering is not a sign of degradation or oppression. It is a commandment from Allah and a sign of purity and dignity. In Islam, women are known for their knowledge and piety, and not their superficial traits.

So yes, Hijab is important and compulsory. May Allah grant you the insight of wearing hijab.

This is a good question. Although i am not qualified in answering the question. But on some of your que. I'll answer. The point where u asked where does it say in the Quran to ware hijab. Well it dosent. But then again the Quran dosent even say how many prayers are there and how to pray them etc. etc. So you have to go by the sunnath. Go post this question on the Hijabi forum and i think you might get more hits there. Or post it on a forum where there is a a lot of people traffic. where u will get qualified sisters who will be able to help you in ur quest :).
