Hiking Mt. Whitney anyone?
Hey Everyone.
I need a victim, I mean buddy to summit Mt. Whitney with me. I reeeeeally want to climb it but everyone I know is lame and gives me excuses like, I'm not in good enough shape. Blah!
Mt. Whitney can be most directly reached by a 10.7 mile (17.1 km) trail from Whitney Portal, 13 miles (21 km) west of the town of Lone Pine on the east side of the Sierra. Ice axes and crampons are needed in spring and early summer, but technical climbing equipment is not usually necessary between mid-July and early October. The elevation at the trailhead is 8360' (2550 meters). The elevation at the summit is 14,491' (4417 meters).
This is a killer hike! - A must for the extreme day hiker. With some careful planning, some conditioning, and the right mental attitude this can be a successful day and an unforgettable experience. Mt. Whitney is a 22 miles round trip hike, has an elevation climb of over 6000 feet, and is one of the most famous extreme day hikes.
The Trail: It averages about 550 feet elevation gain per mile, an easy slope. There are a few shallow stream crossings with a couple of slippery logs and rocks. The trail surface is smooth in most places with some rocks up at the higher elevations. Even in the summer time small patches of snow/ice can often be found on a couple of the 97 switchbacks above Trail Camp.
How Long Does it Take? The ascent time for a day hike up Mt. Whitney is a fast pace of 5 hours, a moderate time of 7-8 hours, and a slow hike of 10 hours. I would like to move at fast pace, moderate at times.
So, if you're not some ax murder and I can be assured that I won't wake up in a tub of ice with my kidneys missing, then holla at your girl. But if your some crazy dude that's sketchy then I must warn you, my right hook is lethal. ;)
Stay Metal,
Leen

Did you end up going up Mt. Whitney? If I lived nearby I would certainly be up for the challenge. In fact, I think one day I will have to hike it as it is the only peak higher than Mt. Elbert, the highest in Colorado and one I have been up. I believe it is also the highest in the continental US. 22 miles is really killer, though; the longest hike I've done is Longs Peak, at 5000 feet and 15 miles, and that took me around 12 hours. You must be in good shape if you can do that in 7 or 8 hrs.
If you made it, then mucho kudos!

Let me first start by telling you I read your profile and you have to be the coolest chick I have ever met. Oh by the way I don't own a tv either. Now here is the thing I am completely down for the hike. But here is the catch I would like to do more then one hike of similar discipline. I don't live in CA, I am in NYC, I will make the trip down. I am more of a mountain biker then a hiker but my endurance is great. Also two of my friends and I are trying to build an adventure racing team and we are looking for one more member. You have to be able to swim, kayak, and mountain bike as well as hike, a little rock climbing depends on the race. Any how if you could plan out about three hikes in a row like this one I will fly out to CA. Oh one last think there is nothing cooler then a girl that could fight. e-mail be back at faz99 at aol
