Hindi movies....soft porn?

Is anyone else getting irritated by the vulgarity of Hindi movies nowadays, and the way women are exploited as nothing more than cheap, slutty sexual objects? Every single song absolutely must feature several half-naked women, gyrating like strippers. The heroines dress up like prostitutes...and we are supposed to sympathize with them? They have become worse than American movies. The majority of American movies feature actresses who actually wear "normal" clothing for most of the film, and don't have raunchy song sequences that are as vulgar as a Britney Spears video. It is getting really old. Does anyone else feel the same?

hanza -

lol - that's funny - it really does give false hope to 'bad to mediocre looking desi men' that if they try real hard, court the good looking girl then they shall succeed!

some girls aren't playing hard to get, uhm they just don't wanna be gotten.....

I'm a "bad to mediocre looking desi man", but I don't feel there is hope or potential out there for me whatsoever *:

Oh, how I yearn for the days of "Mother India." Now there was a strong Desi heroine to look up to! It was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar. But since "Lagaan" and "Salaam Bombay," we haven't come close to Oscar glory again. You have only have to look at recent banalities to find out why - I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this "Garam Masala!"

Mystic makes a good point... It's not only the one-sided nudity that irks us, it's more the fact that female sexuality is used as a tool to manipulate men. It's almost as if everyone is out to either USE or BE USED.

Another thing that irritates me is the fakeness and pretentiousness of most of the characters, which seems to carry over into the real-life personas of the actors as well. When was the last time you saw a Bollywood actress without make-up?

I better be careful, otherwise I'll turn into a scallywag.

Shaz: PD suggested it, I'm just playing along. And I had to google "Mogadan"... couldn't you just say Nytol(tm), or sleeping pills.
Paradise: I hear you like the british accent ;)

Is this the appropriate time for me to hold my hand up and say that I was a shy child? And that I'm still shy but no-one believes me because I can mask it?

Is this also the right time to say that Raheel, I think your dose of Mogadon needs upping as you're being v cheeky. But i'll sit back, watch and wait for PD now to deal with you...

that's an interesting article you've got there Raheely.

so - are men put off by women who make the first move? is this another village entry (what does that qualify as - an orgy?) in the making?

(Modern) women today and their potty mouths... honestly, you'd make your mother's blush!

Anyway, for your reading amusement, "A-list flirting is hazardous": www.guardian.co.uk

ucsmom - i agree. it isn't one movie that makes me upset - it is the constant portrayal og women this way and the 'looking the other way' of what seems like all of society. it transcends movies and culture and permeates many parts of existence. THAT is why it upsets me. it is not an isolated incident or an innocent way of entertainment, but a way of thinking that is behind it that seems to believe that women are for the pleasure of men and reducible to our looks or sex (or both).

I totally agree Paradise. I ended up watching Garam Masala for two reasons. 1. bc of JA (yeah, he's cute) and 2. bc my friend, whom I've always seen as having a very strong character, said 'it was really good.' Now, I didn't know she had such bad taste in movies :P Anyhow, that whole 'let's make women look like mere playthings for men' idea is really quite annoying. You see it once, and you let it go...but now it's repeatedly happening. :#
