How can you tell if she is Muslim or not?
By just looking at someone how can you guess if she is muslim or not?
lets emphasize that not ALL hijabis are slutty and confused.. Alhumdulillah i started wearing hijab after i got married, and im trying to follow all the guidelines with the help of my husband.. but i do understand, there are hijabis out there who pretty much make all us other hijabis look bad.. its sad, but what can we do, just pray for them to follow the true practice of the hijab..
Well I think the obvious answer would be know. A bit like you know, how appereances can be decieving? The outer garments mean nothing if you are rotton on the inside. But who besides God is really in the position to judge.
Not everybody believe in the hijab or being fully covered which is why muslims vary from arabs, asians to americans and europeans. Judging should be left for God. The rest of us should be more concerned with ourselves than others. Calling girls sluts etc. also does not constitute good islamic behaviour - I would argue. At least not if we are to look at verse 11 from Surah 49:
"O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong. "
Hijab or no hijab is between the individual and God. There is no better or just judge than God. That is not an apologetic view but the unavoidable truth.
Surah Al Araf, verse 87: "And if there is a party among you who believes in the message with which I have been sent, and a party which does not believe, hold yourselves in patience until Allah doth decide between us: for He is the best to decide. "
Wow, med school. Mashallah. Where? email me to my naseeb account. Your not too far away right? And your right. At least that's what I presume. It is more difficult to start when you already know all about fashion.
wow mA!! congratulations! i was looking at ur wedding pics and mA they are beautiful - iA your delivery will be easy for you! as for me, i said "i've learned not to judge" but its hard for me sometimes too. esp when i see my muslim friends wearing tight shirts etc... it shouldnt bother me either and i dont know why it does.... so i do understand where u are comin from... anyway, as for hijab, may Allah give u the strength to start! i started at quite a young age - 12 to be exact... in a way im glad i started that young cuz i dont think i would be able to start now.. but at hte same time, i too went through a period where i was wearing it and not conducting myself as a proper muslim. i attribute some of that into not realizing what a huge responsibilty hijab actually was... and not starting for the right reason. things have chnaged since then. i have to say that its hard sometimes, cuz your faith goes up and down from one day to the next... im kind of on a low these days (and have been since starting med school i think)... anyway, i will def keep in touch :-)
People are the same, regardless of location. Even Pakistan itself is not left to serve as a good example. I won't lie. I used to judge a great deal. Even americans. When the mini mini skirt first came out in fashion, every other girl was wearing one. Fat or skinny. It bugged the hell out of me. Why would you were less clothing and leave nothing as a mystery for the men. I can't imagine, any girl not looking like a skank or a sex object wearing clothes like that. But they were not muslims, still it bothered me so much that I actually had to sit myself down and say," Get over it Kiran it's not your problem, just thank Allah (swt) that you are a good muslim." I have come a long way now. It still bothers me, my way of dealing with things now, I just vent to hubby and leave it at that. (Which is still wrong, backbiting kinda). Anywayz inshallah, I really want to start the Hijab soon. I got so close and gave up. I told hubby when we met that after my first child I will begin. My baby is due in 2 and half months now Alhamdhulilah. Keep in touch hun, you can be part of the encouragement for me.
slim -and for the record, i agree, i have a prob with a hijabi having a bf and walking aorund in slutty clothes too.... i guess im speaking from experience bc a friend of mine in college did the same thing.... but what heppened in the end? she stopped wearing hijab (plus her mother made her do it in the first place anyway) she stayed with the guy for 6 yrs and they ended up getting married... she had a lot of issues... i learned not to judge cuz u just never know where pppl are coming from.... but ya u bet i had a problem with it, but she didnt care and i stopped articulating my concern when she made it clear that she didnt care what i thought! so whaddya gonna do?? i dunno... life is complex, ppl are complex....
slim - woah there chica! sorry, i did not mean to sound hostile, and no, i am not taking the issue "personally", its just a common theme i have encountered in countless other villages! thanks for the suggestion to start an org, but i really dont think its that of an issue, and besides, im a bit busy to be starting organizations (but i do live in michigan and that seems to be a pasttime around here - in a good way!). anyway, ur right, i dont have the right to tell other ppl what to say/feel/think/etc, but i do have the right to express my mind, as others have. and i have to disagree with on the point that hijab has been "scarred" - perhaps its a function of where you live, and being in michigan, i havent seen that at all. besides, i think the community as a whole is mature enough to deal with members of the community falling to temptation... and i think we're mature enough to realize that everyones got their story, everyones got their weaknesses, what muslims do is not a reflection of what islam says and what we should be doing... my main point sis is this: just bc other ppl are screwin' around and not taking their responsiblities seriously shouldnt stop you from doing what you feel is right! (not YOU per se but u know, the general you). and that is a sentiment that has been expressed clearly on this forum. as for telling ppl their mistakes.... thats a touchy subject i think. ive learned from experience to abstain from giving ppl advice bc you are right, they'll just deny it or make an excuse... and personally i think its really hard to give naseeha without sounding self-righteous and i dont like being in that position - just my opinion. anyway, no hard feelings aight?
Nuralaain:Just another thing I noticed, you started your comment with "GAWD!" Don't you think that you are using the termonology "GOD" in a negative connotation? Plus I don't know how many people are exactly on naseeb, bit there numerous more muslims out there, that still think about double standard hijabis. If you want to take a stand, YOU SHOULD! start an org., or do something, you can't just tell 20 people that you are sick of it and expect anything to change. Cause reality is people will stick to their issues, unless provided valid references, anything above that is just merely their opinion, which doesn't hold to any concrete persuasion. If you want help, I will support you all the way. Maybe this will knock some sense in to me, and make me a Hijabi sooner. Inshallah, the best of luck to all of us.
Nuralaain: Why are you taking it so personally? If you feel that you are not a hypocryt, that is b/w you and Allah(swt). Any muslim has the right to tell another muslim if they feel that they are at wrong. Reality is, whether you want to accept or not, the Hijab name has been damaged. Someone scarred it. And a muslim woman is NOT a muslim women if she is not practiing Islam. To be a muslim woman and walk around in slutty clothes, have bf, even talk to boys that are not related, yada yada....your going against the regulation set by Islam. As I said before, "This day and age, no girl ever says, yeah your right, thank you for the constructive criticism. They just justify their actions and continue. The only thing we gain is animosity." Why does it have to be that way. If I am doing something improper, or I am not doing something I should, I shall be glad that I was warned in this life time than the dealing with the consequences in the hereafter. For example, you said, "but why should that stop you from doing something for your deen, thats totally b.w u and Allah." You are absolutely correct. All beings have the sense to judge to their opinion. If I am disturbed by a Hijabi with a boyfriend, I will stand my issues on it. I am not punishing her, I am not taking action against her, BUT I THINK IT IS WRONG! If you really like someone, talk to your parents..or pray to Allah (swt)..don't play on temptation, you never know how many are being encouraged to the same. And personally I haven't started Hijab, b/c I am not ready. I know I don't hae a choice in the matter. However I don't want to disrespect the hijab in my life in Allah's (swt) eyes.
gawd! im so sick of hearing "the hijabis in my school are so bad, the hijabis wear tight clothes, why shoudl i wear hijab if ppl that wear hijab are hypocrites?" give ppl a break! they shouldnt be conducting themselves in that manner, agreed, but why should that stop you from doing something for your deen, thats totally b.w u and Allah (if you are thinking of wearing hijab).... so you wear hijab and be a good example! and the other thing is - what im seeing more of these days is my friends that dont wear hijab dressing a certain way and then when we talk about clothes, the conversation always goes like "oh well you cant wear this" - pointing to their pretty much sleevless shirts or tight shirts or tight jeans..... a muslim woman is a muslim woman - hijab or NO HIJAB, arent we all supposed to be respecting ourselves and not dressing like sluts???
I'm getting better with overlooking their poor behavior, but sometimes it hurts. I constantly get people pushing me to wear to hajib in order to be a "proper" Muslima. I actually had one dingbat completely deny that this type of behavior happens. Fortunatly I have some wonderful Muslim friends that help me long with it.
haha Alianna, I know, my university would call them walking contradictions. They wear the tightest clothes to compensate and try to strut their stuff. When the whole point of Hijab is for self control. But, it likes getting the bad apple. I do feel bad for the sincere ones. It's not fair to judge them. I have decided that I will try not to judge any of them, b/c they have to answer to Allah (SWT). This day and age, no girl ever says, yeah your right, thank you for the constructive criticism. They just justify their actions and continue. The only thing we gain is animosity. I am not a perfect muslim myself. I do not pray 5 times a day. I try but it is difficult. I think we get mad Alianna cause we try hard and then we see examples that screw up our name. But every ethnicity has them, african american, thugs and drugs, mexicans, who we always call immigrants,..Look at George Bush himself. Let's take the responsibilty off ourselves and just worry about anwering god for one life.
SS, I'm so glad that you said that. I work on a university campus and those hibaji's get on my nerves soooo bad. They are always running around chasing the guys, sitting in their laps, etc. Some are fully dressed others are not. Other students constantly complain about them because they are rude and they make too much noise. Now that I am a Muslim I am asked why I don't wear one and I can't help myself I get so mad and I ask why should I, Do I look like a slut? To answer the original question, I don't think it matters too much, but it is between that person and God. Most people are very surprised that I am a Muslim, because I do not look like one and I am fully dressed too.The only thing that hangs out is my hair.

You can't :)
To be a muslim, you believe in the Quran and Allah swt, you declare the shahada.
By looking at someone you cannot decide whether they are a muslim unless they are obviously dressed like a muslim and behave like a muslim.
Also, we musn't assume that by not wearing a hijab or not having a beard that a person is not a muslim.
Being a muslim encompasses a lot more than just physical appearance/dress.
:D
