How Do We Bring Up Our Kids in the West

While this is not a dilemma for those of us who move back to Pak/ enrol our kids in islamic schools (which can however backfire)..

How do the rest of us parents/ would be parents intend to provide our kids with the knowledge they need so that they're focussed on what's good and worth adopting in the West ...

as opposed to the nasties

And how much freedom is 'too much'

*note I am keeping this short for those with littler attention spans..

bl**din h*ll ane, are you sure abt the story.. i mean i know weird things happen in pakistan as elsewhere.. but my mum taught at beaconhouse. i went to a similar school.. we also heard of something in a school in saudi, which concerned assault

i agree with zztop though, there are problems in institutions here that are church based etc. or care homes.. which are equally hidden and equally disturbing

humble_soul, thats all fine .. its definitely wrong, but thats a third world country we are talking about.

what do you make of all the sick stories we hear about in the US (priest molestations, child abductions, sex crimes, teacher-student sex, school shootings)

Faizan: are you serious KFC is shut down? Thats so bad...mullahs are so messed up in the head. See these extremists are the ones that cause such problems. By eating food from the west is bad? thats so messed up...There are tons of people who hate the US and love Pakistan and still live here. I say to them that they should go back and live in Pakistan..no need for that kind of negativity ;)

Labina: You are right sexual abuse is every where but I hear a lot of people who were raised in Pakistan or India being molested as a child..lots of asian women and men have been through that. Comparison to the US, its a huge amount. Women in the western culture are respected in sense of having freedom to do what they want education wise as well as career wise.

shirin, i think ills like sexual abuse are there no matter which continent you are in.. and not related to suppression but the ppl sick enough to be perpetrating them and thinking they can get away with them.. can happen anywhere

and i disagree that women are more respected in the west.. any night out in my town/ surrounding towns for instance will either end in some women being involved in a brawl/ indecent assault or worse

Aneeqa: The problem with our "muslim" countries is that women and men are both supressed which is causing a lot of problems..rape, being sexually abused and no respect for women. In the west, women are respect and less sexually abused comparison to the suppressed society. But then again, there is still a huge problem in this society. Things are done openly and there are no restrictions. Dont get me wrong, but I would definitely raise my children in the US, no doubt but I would like to keep them in my community and give them a mind to think for themselves and have my family and friends be involved in their lives. I believe that you have to give your child a good balance b/w the east and the west. I have seen lots of children brought up in the US all their lives who have no clue about their culture and then I have met people who just moved to the US in the last 10 years who hate the US and dog on it day and night and never want to learn the positive about this society. And I would never want my children to be that...having to give them a good balance is hard but doable. I would like to be with my children from the day they are born till they go off to college and at the sametime I will juggle my career with it too. This is what I want but things change depending on the situation...who knows what kind of husband I have or what kind of inlaws I will have....it all depends. But I would want my children to have the best childhood and not have to struggle like I did...

sensible answers shirin.. a lot of people choose not to have kids because of 'what the world is coming to'.. but these are the same fears ppl had 2 generations ago (and probably before as well)..

knew you'd like the pic, fon..

Honestly, I am afraid to raise my children in this world, period. I love children but scared for them that this world is becoming worse day by day. But I love kids and want my own some day. I am planning on having my inlaws and my parents being involved in my children's lives all the time. I want my brothers and my hubby's siblings to be involved too. And I would take my kids back to Pakistan every year so they learn the culture and adapt to it. Luckily, my parents raised us in Pakistan for my first 10 years of my life. I had a real hard time adjusting to the western world when I moved here because I had no clue about sex, boyfriends, kissing, menstrual cylce, absolutely nothing. In 8th grade, we were given these forms to be filled out by parents regarding sex education, and my mother actually signed it and thats when I learned about it. Even then, I still didnt ever have a boyfriend in school, never did anything when I was growing up, more like I lived a sheltered life, worked to make ends meet and be a good kid. I never broke the rules in my house and luckily, I had an open relationship with my mom when I hit my teens. So yes I would want my children to have a very open relationship. I would talk and educate them about everything and let them be away of whats going on around them. Its very important these days. And no, I wouldnt have cable or internet in my house. I would like to have them involved in school activities all the time and get them in a habit of reading books.

yehbandishain,

you're absolutely right with those 3 points; point 3 reminded me of the old it takes a village to raise a child adage; with nuclear/ far flung families and the 'village' being dispersed we have to make our friends and Muslim communities serve that purpose
