How does Neruda influence you?

How does Neruda influence you?

The answer to this you folks should include when posting his poems. What does it mean to you? Sure the words are great and so is the imagery.

But what in them provokes you?

Neruda, from what little I know of him, was a man of revolutionary ideals. Though we may not care to carry forward those ideals, or may even find those ideals repugnant, but his poems are sprinkled with some elements which we can associate with.

Appreciate with sincerity!

So! Let me do the honors.

Well, as they say, poets capture the feelings of not just one nation, but humanity in general.

Spanish writers (their translations) have always been captivating. No one more so than Garcia Marquez. They transport me into an enchanting world where anything is possible and miracles are rendered less fascinating than bizarre realities. But everytime I wonder about my love for these writers, I find myself once agains trying to explain why Latin Americans and their history is so comparatively different.

What is it about them that makes them so alive? Why can't say other nations- Pakistan, Indonesia, Egypt or other Muslim countries emerge with individuals who fail to understand that compromises and bowing to the more powerful is an acceptable method of living? Why is Latin America infested with the spirit of resistence against the status quo? Why is it only Latin America that continually props up the likes of Castro, Che, Chavez and now Morales? These leaders are ten times more dangerous to American imperial influence than Saddam could ever hope of being. Yet, they emerge with defiance in American's own backyard!

It is the general prevalence of this spirit of defiance - defiance against imperialism, against poverty, against organized religion, against inequality which forms the well springs of faith and love. And from it springs the poetry of Pablo Neruda - poetry that celebrates that spirit!
