I totally agree with br. Amr's point about the heaven/hell/creation jokes....I don't like messing with that..

I really don't like the concept of "se3eedi" jokes for the same reasons discussed before...and people usually think I'm not taking it easy...but I just hate stereotyping them ALL as clueless in that way....so I try to tell people at least say "mara wa7ed" w khalas....or even "wa7ed baladeyatna"...or is "baladeyatna" still considered se3eedi? hmmm...

i do agree that they should be avoided, but i think if there is a moral behind it, i'd say it's ok, because your trying to teach someone somthing, but otherwise i don't know if i'd go there

ok, may be this is a little bit off topic, but the last two posts remind me with other types of jokes that we, Muslims, should totally avoid. Without offending anyone, and with all due respect to ppl who think to the contrary, I believe that jokes that address Allah, Creation, Heaven, Hell, etc. should be avoided regardless of the implicit humor in it or the moral behind it. I would be thankful if someone could prove me wrong! Here is what I once read* before regarding this:

"If you question them, they declare (with emphasis) ; 'We were only talking idly and in play.' Say: 'Was it at Allah, and His Signs, and His Messenger that you were mocking?'" (10:65)

hmm, that is a good point, now was it one of the comedians that made fun of chinese so bad that they left? that's a bit extreme to make fun that much, but i know myself, ive always been guilty of having fun at someone elses expense, not that i got overboard, but it's still wrong, but i've seen thier show, but i don't know what would thier shwo consist of if they eliminated that aspect of it, i don't think it would be near as good, but i think this may be a ethics question more than anything, i'm not sure

I have mixed feelings about the Allah made me funny tour and Ahmed Ahmed. I got to listen to Ahmed Ahmed at one of the CAIR events...and I have to admit that some of the jokes are really hilarious. I also understand that this is their way of breaking the barriers and normalizing "Muslims" through comedy, and fighting the misconceptions that are rampant about us nowadays....but they follow the American style of stand-up comedy that relies many times on making fun of different ethnicities/cultures. I attended an Improv comedy show once and remember this chinese family that got up and left because they were so offended. How is that different from Azhar when he poked fun at how Muslims from different ethnicities speak, etc. I can't help then but think of the verse "la yaskhar qawm men qawm 3asa an yakoono khayran menhom" (let there not be a nation make fun or laugh at another lest the others be better than them)..

I guess it's okay if they are making fun of things that are affecting us as Muslims in the U.S., the over-reaction with terrorism, etc., but to stay away from making fun of Pakistanis, Egyptians, etc.

What do you guys think...?
