I like the number 12, but not for the number of children, 12 Million dollars for example is a great salary

of course I am not the one giving birth, so this opinion matters very little, but if Allah wills it, I like even numbers, so 2 or 4.

This is not to mean of course that we just leave it "barakawy" all the way (helwa barakawy di :D ). I mean, the mom can't be in poor health where having the baby would harm her, and we just say it is a gift from Allah. And that is the beauty of Islam...its flexibility and understanding of human nature in balance with Allah's laws...

Allah says in the Qur'an:

Or He bestows both males and females, and He leaves barren whom He will: for He is full of Knowledge and Power.
(suret Ash'ura)]

------------------

The word "bestow" isn't as descriptive of the term in Arabic, because the actual verses says that Allah
" Yaheb"...from the word "Heba", which is gift in Arabic. Therefore, I don't think we really have a say in this as it is Allah who gives people males, females, or both, or none whatsoever according to the verses. So insha'Allah in answer to the question, WHATEVER Allah gives people is to be thanked for, and most important is to raise them well insha'Allah.

As a side-note, I find it ludicrous in our culture when some families get upset still when they expected sons and Allah gave them daughters instead. I've seen this from the most religious and educated people.

You can't plan the number. It depends on so many variables, yours and your spouse's careers, your (both of you) experience with the first child, the wife's health and other factors that you can't know now or predict. Fixing a number is being so unrealistic. What if you say I want 2 but then you found you can handle three or four and both of you really wanted to have 2 other kids. What if you say I want 4 then both of you couldn't have four for any freakin reason. The question is: Do you want to plan it or barakawy?

i'm all about planned parenthood.. something arabs should look more into. Oops, that's not exactly answering the question.
