How often do you do an oil change?

I got my 2004 530i last year. I know BMW does free oil changes under the warranty plan at certain intervals. I plan on keeping this car for a long time. I did a voluntary oil change at 5,000 miles, had a warranty one at 10,000 and now my car is flashing to do one at 13,000 (I did a lot of driving since the 2nd one).

How often should I do the oil change outside of when the car tells me to?

I heard that before BMW started offering free oil changes, they recommended doing them more often than they do now.

Mobil 1 fully synthetic and Castrol's fully synthetic oils are the best for bimmers..Also if you have a lots of miles on your car go with a thicker grade in the summer and resume back to your regular grade in the winter...

2k miles is way extreme and frankly a waste of money in my opinion. oil changes are not cheap. i do not believe that by not using Castrol Syntec you will void the warranty. BMW has a list of appropriate oils-- for example, i'm sure Mobile 1 would not violate the warranty.

5k miles is what i would recommend. my manual says every "15k", so personally i think anywhere between 5-7.5k is just fine.

i think for my car 98 328i bmw recommends every 7000 miles but i change it about ever 3000-4000 miles. every 4 months or so, its better to be on the safe side even though these engines are strong and do last long.

Yes they do ... actually it also depends on your driving habits.
Note when you first start up the car .. your computer display will tell you how many kms/miles left till the next service.
In your case ... if it is a brand new X5 ... it should be about 1200miles ... because that is the break in point ... and at that point they will do an oil change and you then you should be good for around anywhere from 15,000 to 25,000 ..... depends on the oil they use, the schedule they have set up for that specific vehicle and your driving habits.
Hence it is best to check your computer as soon as you turn on your vehicle for the next schedule maintenance.

by the way ... Ramadan Mabruk to you all ... may Allah bestow the blessings of this month upon you and your family Insha'allah.

I just bought my X5. Do different cars have different oil change schedules?

It's great to see a bmw referred to by its true nickname ("bimmer").
With synthetic oil I have heard many testimonials about the longevity of the the oil. And these have been people in the know, including the lubrication manager at a power plant (long story!).

Apart from my bimmer, i have also maintained the same schedule (at least 10,000 miles) with my mazda and there has been nary a problem even with 140 K under the hood. And for the mazda I have bought synthetic oil over the shelf.

My Bimmer is scheduled for oil change every 25,000 KM (note .. canadian vehicle). So that is 4 oil changes every 100,000 km's. Apparently BMW uses some special synthetic oil that is very hard to find else where and they say it is good for 25,000 and stand by it. So the computer will prompt for service every 25,000 kms. However i want longigivity of the engine, hence i change my oil every 5000 kms. Last thing i need is an engine rebuild after 100,000 km ... and thats when the warranty expires.
With my previous vehicle i used to change the oil every 3000kms ... and i tell you ... you could feel the difference. It just used to rev like there's nothing holding it back.
So if you are not leasing and plan on keeping the car, don't just stick by the Warranty service plan oil change ..... do yourself and your Bimmer a favour by being proactive and change the oil every 5000km ... dont know what that is exactly in miles ... i believe 3000 miles???

With synthetic oil, you can go over but close to 15000 (yes fifteen thousand) miles. The service manager at a BMW dealership told me this.
So, don;t be too worried if you have synthetic oil.

2000 miles? Isn't that a little extreme? BTW, BMW recommends Castrol Synthetic so if you use that, you won't void the warranty.

Ok, Posh desi, no you cannot get 5HP more with an oil change. thats a pure fallacy. even putting a CAI will only increase it marginally. Usually they put those to make it sound better. Now as far as oil change goes, rely on ur cars computer. Thats what they built it for. In BMWs the computers dont just measure the miles but actual driving conditions that you put the car through. So changing the oil frequently adds very little value. Since the car uses synthetic oil, it does not leave any slime/grime on the itnernal engine parts nor does it break up. Hence no need to change the oil so frequently. Unles you have the extra change to throw around. Also, use BMW oil only. Replacing it with anything else voids the BMW warranty (very hard for them to catch but if they do..you're in trouble). Hanza, even though you got an oil change done 7k miles ago, they did not reset the cars original 'settings' for every 15k mile service. Easier for them and you to keep a track of your 15k, 30k, 45k etc miles services. Hence your light is legit. Again, the oil itself is not tested by the car, only the driving conditions and mileage is. Hope that helped

My husband told me yesterday that he thinks we should do the oil change every 6,000 miles. We want to keep this car for a long time.

I actually get a call from my dealer's service department that my oil change is coming soon, so i try to time it rite to get it done before light start to show that i need it. Just look at ur I-drive or the caution sign.. dont worry about it.. even couple of thousand miles will not make difference.. oil change is way to make money for these people also..

I made an appointment for an oil change. When I got there, they told me they were surprised I made this appointment since I just had one in March. Turns out, I misread the speedometer. The 13,000 flash I saw every time I started the car meant 13,000 miles until the NEXT oil change. Now the number is slowly decreasing. Live and learn........

Jamilaz, the new BMW's should be able to go 12-15,000 miles between oil changes depending on driving style. I bought mine new a few years ago, and have close to 140kmi. I change the oil whenever the sensor goes off(every 13k), and I've had no problems. To be on the safer side, you can change it every 7500.... but that's really no neccesary.

If you drive a manual though, you need to keep an eye on the oil level because the 3.0 engines do consume oil.

Poshdesi - I take the car to the bmw dealer so they can do the oil changes. I know they use synthetic oil. I'll ask then about what you said regarding overtightening the oil filter.
