Scorpian_friend-l people with power and who r well connected in peshawar get away with every and anything-- Laws of such sort usually hurt middle class people who lack education and many of the men take the law to promote their own agendas- the 52 states of america dont take away the freedom of speech and expression- I can go out with hijab or without one- u see my point-I along with many people love peshawar- I cherish it and have many investments in it, but i dont want to have to move because such laws r being passed and interferring with my everyday life- Most of the city dwellers in peshawar dont cover/parda and its not called for esp when a lot of them are not necessarily pathan-

this reminds me of when they banned music in nwfp. i don't think it made any difference. The only thing that happened was everyone outside of nwfp made a big deal about it but as far as i know no one in nwfp stopped listening to music.

Khanblues, you mentioned about the other 3 provinces, what about 52 states in USA, different state has different laws.
The member of provice assembly are the people who are presenting the whole provice and according to the constitution of pakistan if the 2/3 of the members agree on the bill then that bill should pass. I don't see any protest or any thing against this law in the provice, but the national assembly and specially the punjabies and some minintors(punjabies).

Bear in mind that after the dissolution of the Taliban in Afghanistan, many of their former rank and file are now exercising their political clout in NWFP. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing but laws like this are a tell-tale sign of that political reality. The Taliban were and are extremely popular with the average layperson in NWFP.

Personally, I see the law more as symbolic than anything else. Its not going to "enforce" anything on anyone since the women have been conforming to that for over a thousand years. This is a strategy to introduce Shari`ah into the region. Start introducing laws from Shari`ah that the people are already following ANYWAYS, and once you have done that with great success and have gained the trust of the masses then you enforce less popular laws from Shari`ah (such as strictly banning alcohol, brothels, etc).

I, personally, don't see it as necesarily a bad thing as long as they do it in an educated manner and not in some attempt to hammer society back to the 7th century AD.

Women in NWFP along with tourist cover to feel safe* if anything- I am not undermining the fact that they cover but to pass a law and make it mandatory is giving men more of a reason to pick on women and hit and harrass them! esp when such a law dosent inculde the other three states of pakistan- one more reason to leave a bitter taste in peoples mouth about Subah Sarhad!

busho!! most of the religious scholars in pakistan agree that body and hair should be covered for sure but a woman can keep her face and hand till wrist uncoevered but i don't nkow the limitation of law they passed inNWFP whether they allow the face uncovered, i hope they have allowed to keep face uncovered in this law.

if application of religion becomes mandatory, then it doesnt remain a democracy anymore (my perception). There is nothing wrong with covering the face, or not covering it. The only thing wrong is see, is the implication of such law by a democraticaly elected governement - kinda defeating the purpose. If we state that the shariah law applies here, and we dont go by the constitution then fine, mandate as many religious sanctions as possible as its upfront and clear, but for GOD sakes dont blame the democratic process for such implications. Personaly, i think that its a personal / religious matter for the girl to decide if she wants to do it or not, that to me is a more appropriate and unbised way/ solution for such issues.

hijab to be law, i can totally understand...(if they can make hijab against the law in other ridiculous countries, we can make it part of the law in ours)...but to make it mandatory, to cover ur face, it just feels weird....isnt there liek a rule in hajj, where a woman cant cover her face, and if she does, the cloth cant touch her or something? (correct me if im wrong)

yeah, i agree with that...but my comfort level may not be the same as someone elses...i feel comfortable in parda, even though i dont wear a hijab in canada...BUT...i think we need to realize, hijab is a farz, but covering ur face isnt...for it to become law, i dont know, it doesnt seem 'fair' (for lack of a better term)...

The good thing is now every girl would have right to work. Because most of the employee wants a girl who doesn't do parda. They want girl who can attract people rather do work. As the law now says the women should do the parda the employer wouldn't have any reason. A girl can even go to court now if the employer demand not to do parda.

in Quetta we have to cover our faces...whether its the law or not...and quite honestly, the way ppl are there, i feel alot more comfortable with my face covered....(the whole point is not to bring attention to urself...the 'wrong' kind of attention)

do the girls have to cover their faces? i guess for most women in NWFP the law won't make much of a difference because they are already doing parda. the only places it might affect women is in the cities.
