A man not afraid too cook, clean, nurture his children. Not insecure of my girl's independence, career. Not power hungry to be the boss. Look for friendship as base of marriage.

In a son-in-law? Hmmm . . . . my attributes. LOL (A)

my father is too wholesome for his own good.

He did tell me at the same age, that my mother was his best friend, and to look for that in a woman.

Lot not all of my beliefs in what to look for in a relationship comes from my parents.

Labs, excellent point about the unhealthy habits/vocation of gossip mongering.

My father told me when I was around 10, that women should be out of the house to stimulate their brain whehter they had a career or not.

irfani, when you say the 'allowance of a woman to have a career' .. for 'financial, emotional and mental freedom' i would reword that as a need for emotional health rather than freedom/security..

.. having seen too many aunties who stayed at home and spent the day doing little but gossiping away about Farah's son's shenanigans and Sajida's daughter's studies on the phone/ in person..

in some cases they even make a career out of this which apparently supercedes their duty to husband/ home or kids.. i say women should get out of the house, use their brains and contribute to society rather than being the village gossip mongers

fun_ny i think we need another JE where we can make a giant khitchri out of 'what women want' vs 'what men want'.. which will probably cover the whole spectrum seeing how many different personalities we have on here

One thing not hear that was discussed in another JE, is the allowance of a woman to have a career regardless whether they have children or not. Women need that ability for financial, emotional and mental freedom.

If they marry a jerk, they can leave easier than feeling trapped due to lack of career, money, etc. Just generalizing at a high-level at this point.

Don't forget the "Apologize and Acknowledge when he is wrong" Ability

NORMAL, btw isn't necessarilty the same as COMMON. The norms of society dictate - in my opinion - that men should be this way. Doesn't mean that they are. I guess one could argue that NORMAL shouldn't really even be used. Maybe it should be REALISTIC and EXPECTED husband.

btw, funny, don't think my last comment was insinuating that I think you are a hypocrite or fake. I was only talking about the poem :)

Also the caps is just to emphasize the diff between NORMAL and IDEAL :)

Well it's utopic in nature to imagine what an IDEAL husband would be in the eyes of the general view of women. Women have different needs like any person and as such, they will find different things appealing in their opinion of IDEAL.

As for a NORMAL husband, I would see it as man that caters to the needs of his wife. Someone that understands those needs and supplements them to the best of their ability. A guy that listens - not just hears - to what his wife says and DOESN'T say. Sometimes we all (men too) give suttle hints about things and assume our partner should know. Well I think it's a fair assumption; you're partner is with you for life, so who better to know you? Marriage is a partnership and a man has to realize his end of it too.

Also the man has to know when to take charge and when to stand by. Each sex has certain insights that the other doesn't have; who are we to not acknowledge them?

Essentials? There are no essentials - to each their own. Okay, maybe one essential: that the two of you work. The attributes of the guy must be complementary to your own attributes. And guess what? That covers many different guys and is totally dependent on what you are like yourself. There are no hard and fast rules. Even the worst guy complements someone!

ok, coolfire, point heard loud and clear and taken aboard...

so let's hear your idea of essentials in today's NORMAL modern husband...and if possible today's IDEAL husband, from a man's point of view.....

taking the womens view and the the mens view, i will attempt to marry them together to produce an equally acceptable view....

Well then one is just being fake or a hypocrite if a person behaves like they do in the poem. Truth of the matter is, very macho guys typically aren't that sensitive. And overly sensitive guys typically aren't that macho. If you want a "rugged" guy that's sensitive, then all you are asking for is a NORMAL guy. :)

COOLFIRE i don't really think that it is a contradiction of personality types.....afterall, we created these labels to simplify the complex world of human personality.....

it's kind of like this...

people say i'm the life of the party,
coz i tell a joke or two,
even though i laugh loud and hearty,
deep inside i'm blue...

so take a good look at my face,
u'll see my smile sticks out of place,
if u look closer it's easy to trace,
the tracks of my tears....

excuse me, sniffle , sniffle....

ROFL Labs comment "emigrating to playas-ville"

I grudgingly agree with Fun_ny, that women looking for a wifey with macho exterior. That is the 'modern woman'
