I gotta be honest

I used to love Ramadhan and couldnt wait for it to start. But now, Im dreading it. I mean its not like I have a constant need to eat or anything, but I cant stand being groggy all day from lack of sleep and no coffee to quell it. And the whole iftaar thing is always in the way, last Ramadhan, I had many iftaars stuck in traffic. And I get very offended when somebody tries to wake me up for Sehri, thats a no-no, I need every minute of sleep and Im not about to give that up for a cup of milk and a croissant. And then I wake up feeling terrible, knowing that I went so far as to do a Roza but couldnt even do my namaz on time.

I feel guilty for saying this, like right about now I should be struck by lightning. Im totally planning on keeping all my fasts, but I think Im gonna be pretty cranky.

This is always a very guilt ridden time of year for me.

i used to have same feelings when my family was here with me. My mom always served us with my favorite Punjabi breakfast, but i felt like throwing out eating it at 4,5 o'clock in the morning. I pretty much agree with u and i feel like doing the same thing. When its 2,3 o'clock in the afternoon, i can barely keep my fingers on the keyboard at work and my stomach is hurting. But i bet there are far more people in Pakistan after the quake who are feeling even worse pain cause of hunger. I think one need to understand purpose behind the fasting. I read quran almost every nite. Allah reminds us again and again about our death and the judgement day. Ramadan is the month where you are given the opportunity to correct your deeds and seek forgiveness. If you make your intention that i'm fasting cause i want to be a better muslim and so i can please Allah, you would not have hard time getting up. Everything is initiated in a thought. Think you want the best out of Ramadan.

Rommi: Yeah, thats right. I kinda feel too, that one should act like an annoying child in a temper tantrum towards Allah, cuz it makes us petty. DC: smart idea. Choco: Thanks!

mehnazmd: at least you are honest about your feelings... and i hear ya! I know so many people that are stuck in their car or at work when Iftar comes... good luck to you:)

i hear from my family- that we shouldn't be complaining while fasting... why is that?

i am actually doing okay. I am eating pretty healthy and taking vitamins.. and doing a light workout before bedtime which kinda recharges me for sehri. at work, i told my company i am leaving a little early each day to avoid traffic to have sufficient time for iftar.

Fajr Salat happens after Sehri .So if you wake up after Fajar , then yes its kaza, and not kaza if you wake up at Fajar time .
If you do intention for the Soum ( roza) in the night when you go to sleep you should be ok , however it is not prefereable.

For me fasting is not too difficult, but waking up for sehri is soooooooo hard. Does a fast without sehri count? Obviously that would mean praying Fajr as kazaa.

Sorry if this was already addressed elsewhere.

.. alot of my co-workers at very supportive of my fasting as i am only muslim in the office. Last year they had a little article in the company weekly newsletter informing about ramadan and it bridged an understanding.

yeah i can agree ya 'All , during ramadan its gets hard, my biggest regret is that i can't make salah on time, once i had to make salah on the subway
(by the way i live in new yorkso ofcourse my major transportation is subway) and my worst iftar was a tictac i had to go an hr after that tictac untill i got home, i was all drained out. my other problem is, i can't eat much durin sehri cuz it too early to stuff myslef with food. i jus can't, max i cud do is a glass of milk and banana. then i gte hungry during the fast :-

Hahah "struck by lightning .." . Hey if a person is aware of their shortcomings it becomes easier for them to overcome it ..I can feel ya on stucking in traffic : I have had iftar with a chewing gum ! ( i dont know if its ok though .lol ) .. while stuck in traffic .. For getting sleep I used to just pig out in night and only wake up straight for fajar .. worked all the time when I was in college ...

Also......remember, the gates of heaven are open during this time and ALlah's mercy is upon us, so seek Allah's guidance and help in dealing with your guilty feelings. Allah is the one who created you so really only ALlah knows where your feelings are coming from.....trust Allah and it will all turn out well, Inshallah.

Mehnaz......good for you for being honest cuz I'm sure many people feel the same way. Its funny, cuz for me.......I feel much more happy during Ramadan because i feel more alive and like I have MUCH MORE time on my hands because you don't have to worry about eating breakfast or lunch. I think the key is to not ONLY make sure that we pray on time.....but be totally conscious of the fact that we are standing infront of our creator when we are praying. IF you can increase that sense of closeness to Allah during Ramadan......you don't feel cranky, or tired, but rather rejuvenated. Also, if you keep Allah in your thoughts at all times, all your other work (studying, classes, job) becomes som much more easier. I hope that helps.....at least its what works for me.....ALlahoallam.

thanks girls!! Yeah ramadhan spirit is a great thing. if you get really into a good cycle of always remembering to pray on time and then gathering for festivities, it helps a lot. I guess it was those wierd years of my life in a university dorm w/o a community that i really suffered. i need to get over it.

haha... im laughing but i totally know and share many of the same sentiments lately... why does it seem like it was easier to fast when we were younger?? anyway, i'm trying to ward off that feeling by sitting down and really figuring out what id like to accomplish this ramadan (as i already told rommaan in my je comments hehe). maybe u can start plannin some get togethres with ur friends to help everyone get into the ramadan spirit too! things like that might help....

awww mehnaz. i know what u mean re: feeling cranky after not eating, i guess it's natural in some ways to feel cranky when you're deprived of something you're used to. often when i'm fasting but don't want to be irritable, i just won't say anything and be quiet rather than start talking to someone in that mood. as exhausting as it is, we know we're doing it voluntarily for its benefits so why ruin that by showing others and even ourselves if it's affecting our mood. and plus a state of mind is all derived from what we make it to be. so if you are convinced yourself that you do LIKE it ( you do!) than that will come through. when pple ask me : aren't you tired, hungry etc, i'll say yeah, but i'm glad i'm doing it and get into a conversation about all the good things about it.
