I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

I have two manuscripts that I wanted to finish reading by today for work so that I could begin pitching them to magazines. I had every intention of starting on them over the weekend, but made one big mistake: I picked up Ann Patchett's BEL CANTO. Now, I can't put it down and have gotten absolutely zilch done for work. This is one of those novels that you simply can't get enough of: you read it before going to bed, you enjoy a bit of it on the train to work and sneak in a page or two as you walk home from the station. The novel opens in the mansion of the Vice-President of an unnamed South American country, where dignitaries and officials are celebrating a Japanese businessman's birthday. Terrorists invade the mansion and hold the party hostage. However, the violence and the terror slowly give way to compassion, friendship and a fantastic vision of what the world can be. This book is breathtaking and I HIGHLY recommend it.
Has anyone else out there read this or any other novels by Ann Patchett?

per sabila's rec - i picked up 'bel canto' and 'dogs of babel' as well. :o) i found the latter to be profoundly sad. . .liked it, but i needed to read something less *heavy* after it. go figure that i picked up 'my sister's keeper' next (if you haven't read it - it's got some depressing issues as well). although i did really really like 'my sister's keeper.' :o) will prolly read 'bel canto' once i finish 'memoirs of a geisha' (which i am loving!). :o)

It has a lingering effect, cant really explain it in words. It's like you can get into the skin of the characters. After reading Dan Brown, I couldnt find a book that was on par with De Vinci Code and Angels and Demons but I think "Dogs of Babel" came close to it :)

I have to admit Bel Canto was very slow pace. SabilaK, Thanks for recommending ?Dogs of Babel?. I loved that book.

Shaque, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy BELLE CANTO. You're right about it being slow. I, however, enjoyed the pace of the novel; it was almost as if time stood still in this utopia made from the unlikeliest of situations. I didn't want it to end.
What are you reading now?

sabilak--ok, so i finally finished this book a few weeks ago...and i was disappointed:( which was unfortunate because i wanted so much to like it. maybe i just dont like that style of writing....i dunno. i thought it was really slow and almost a drag, at times. i agree that the ending was rushed, though--which i welcomed b/c i just wanted the book to END!

RoseRed, I do work in publishing and am the biggest pusher of books I know. Would help if this was one of our tiles (I'm pushing those pleny too, though). Shaque, I'm thrilled that I could find you a great book and potentially a great guy all in one shot. I do work in magical ways, don't I? ;)

Actually, as wonderful as the book was, I felt that the end was a bit rushed. What do you think SK?

Oh, I keep meaning to pick this up after we studied the opening pages in our MA Creative Writing as a masterclass in opening a story. It was fantastic - that's it, I'm going to Amazon now!

Actually, i read Bel Canto a while ago. I remember that I couldn't put it down either. I really found interesting the different types of relationships and corresponding dynamics between people. My favourite relationship? The one between the translator and Carmen....

So, I guess it's safe to assume that no one's read anything by Ann Patchett.
