I'm a novice

I'm basically scrambling around trying to get information. I'm buying my first car soon and I don't know what I should be looking for. I figured you guys would be good to ask. I need a used car, maybe 1999-2001. I basically need something that will get me to and from work and never, ever, ever break down on the highway and leave me at the mercy of strangers. What cars get the best gas mileage? And someone talk me out of buying a VW Beetle!

OK kids, I found a car that is tad below Kelley Blue Book Price (about a thousand dollars!). Does this mean maybe it was in an accident or something? Maybe someone was murdered in it and their body stuffed in the trunk? Its a 2001 Corolla with a bit less than 50k miles on it.

Fisaw, I was leaning towards Toyota. I learned how to drive on a Toyota, I'm rather fond of them. I crashed one, too, and lived! Yeah, i'm am dying to hear about this deer. Please tell me it survived. I really loved Bambi. I hope you didn't hurt Bambi. Thumper I could live without.

not all japenese are created equal. honda, toyota... yes, very reliable (toyota more than honda). however, if you go down to suzuki level, you'ren ot getting a reliable machine. even mazda and nissan haven't exactly been good. as for the gas mileage, you have to check individual models. for example, nissans, because of their plentiful power, tend not to get the best possible mileages.

I have a feeling I'm leaning towards a Toyota or Honda. Function is more important than fashion... unless we're talking about shoes. Apakhalla, are you driving a Japanese car now? Which one and how is the mileage?

Salamz,If you're getting your first car then I'd recommend getting a Japanese model, I honda or toyota.Personally I love honda's, but anything japanese is nice. They're both stylish and have a great mileage/performance. I'm not to inept about VW's not really my type of car, but I thought they're a bit harsher on the gas...

Salamz,

hmmm... you'll always have a compromise w/ any car brand you decide to go w/! American cars are VERY affordable but lack sophistication & performance. Japanese cars are VERY reliable but lack personality & style. German cars are VERY refined & well-engineered but lack reliability (albeit slightly). Italian cars are VERY stylish & alluring but lack build-quality. Anything from Honda or Toyota is rock-solid in quality & efficiency, but rather sedate & dull. I personally have few friends & family members w/ VW Beetles and their experiences have been positive overall.

Fisaw, you hit a deer! Oh my God! OK, I wanted the VW for the cute factor. My dad was totally against the VW. so I should go with a Toyota? My price range is about ten thousand.

as for your question: what is your price range? I'm actually in the same boat as you, as i recently totalled my vehicle (hit a deer, it was unavoidable).

reason not to get the VW: it will leave you stranded on the side of the highway. VW's, while many people think they're great reliable german engineered vehicles, consistently rank at the bottom of quality surveys. I used to work for a company that took care of press vehicles for manufacturers and the VW's were constantly being sent to the shop. your choice.
