im coming to Houston

Hi everyone. I've lived in NY for 25 years and have been offered an opportunity to move to Houston. My sister has been living there for 3 years now. Obviously I am used to the big city, crowd, rush and rudeness of NY. My question is will I like Houston??? If you guys could please point out both good and bads of Houston I would really appreciate. Anything that can make my decision a bit easier. Tell me what you like about Houston and what you dont like about Houston.

Thanks so much, your opinions are appreciated!!!

houston is great. been here for over 23 years..it urban, if you are an inner city dweller and like to live in colorful communities, its quiet and peaceful if you are a suburbanite..it has a thriving art and creative community, beautiful Mosques and Religous Activities, affluent Cultural community, restaurants, and tons and tons of MUSLIMS...so come on down, at least try it for a weekend.

dont let the sauna like weather be a detterent, at least we dont get snowed in...

hope that helped!

samasas, thanks for all the good tips. I am planning on visiting Houston in August...and yes, I have already spoken to cateyes and we are planning to hang out when I get there.

And from what you guys have told me so far, I can def see myself living there.

Heat shouldnt be too much of a problem because I love warm weather....one of the many reasons I want to leave NY. I dont like the 8 months of winter we have....I dont like the rude people.....and I also dont like the hectic lifestyle anymore.

But again thanks for all the help

Zaara, you know that Farha, she is in your friend list, live here, in Houston. And she is moving to NYC next month. She would be your best guide I guess. and "Cateyes" can be easily found on Starbucks in Galleria Area :-) you dont have to email her (lol, just kidding). Cateyes is really social, so you got to meet her. As per Houston, its more like Karachi. Humid, hot, populated, smoke out of chimneys around Pasadena refineries, lots of railroad crossings (is it me who always get that many), all kinds of people (from diff nations). But most buildings are two-three stories, even though we are THE SPACE CITY, with occasional high rises. Renting and buying real state is dirt cheap comparing other popular cities in USA. Cant walk here, You need to DRIVE even if you got to just buy milk around the corner store. And do not even imagine to try public transportation METRO. If you did, then you might have to really walk up to your destination, cause METRO got its own stop and they are far from your destinations. Desi people mostly found every show-off places. But I got to tell you, Houston Teen are less corrupt comparing to other major cities. So i you like party, you better go with whites or mexicans (or really got to find gals who do go :-)/).
Although there are lots of good people and I can tell you , if you moved here, you wont move out. Its like Hotel California, you can checkin anyday, but cant checkout.

Good luck.

Yeh, the unknown is always scary and then it gets worse...lol, just kidding! Houston is good place to be, one of the few cities where "retiring early" is still possible. You may email me for any specific tips/tricks to this city.

ehtesham bro, i respect your line, but never say "never"

why? here is a scenario, you are with the best mate and the love of your life would you like to go to a brothal, a strip club etc... maybe not, and there are million of those place where you wouldnt go, even if you are with the right person

no offese intended -- just playing devils advocate :)

correction we were named the 3rd fatest city by a men's health magansine that didn't do its research although people here are usally fat....so.

Although houston is cheaper and not as cold, everything is so freakin spread out its redicolus, there are very limited things that are open past 11pm, although people say there is a lot to do here you can do it all in a month.

People here are all nice and sweet...you know "southern hospitality". The summers are 5 degress under what hell feels like, downtown is DEAD after 5pm, the only coffee shops here are starbucks, starbucks, and oh ya starbucks. lol. oh and walmart, but thats not really coffee. hmmmm. although there are other coffee shops thats where you go to get away from everyone....

Houston is cool i guess i don't mind it that much cause i have lived here for ever and it rubs off on ya, but its totally up to what you like. Do you like walking or driving, do you people or no? lol etc.

it seriously depends where your job is located. Plus if you are looking to rent or buy. Houston is soooooo widly populated, it might take one person good 2 hours from north houston to south. If its the rush hours you could be in there for eternity.

Real estate is a lot cheaper than NY. But if you yearn the taste, you do pay the price :). There a a few high rise appartments too, but mostly 2 or max 3 story apartments. Houses inside the city and near downtown are almost untouchable (i speak from my financial reletivity, might not apply to everyone :) ).

But the good thing is Gas is cheaper than NY. so you can live away from your work and drive a good car, and thank God for no Parallel Parkings. lol!
