Iman Shot

Assalam Alaikum

When I had first converted and was really learning,
my iman was very high. Then when I started
wearing hijab, it was high again, and etc, etc...
But now that I've been Muslim a few years,
of course theres still so much to learn but
sometimes I find my motivation/iman down. I
just feel like I'm going through my prayers
and not really feeling motivated enough. I
think this is a combination of maybe becoming
too comfortable with my level of deen (which
of course really can always use improvement)
and being really busy with life in general.
What do you guys do to keep your iman high,
or to give your iman a boost?

I think that is a great idea - I think having a career in which you feel lik you can help people makes a big difference.

I've also been feeling this way the past year after moving to a new area. It's really hard to feel motivated when you can't find a good community. Recently I decided to change my career and go back to school. I have a background in business but am now in school for Nursing. I felt like I wasn't doing enough in my daily life for the sake of Allah. I wanted to have a career where I could make a difference and help others. I have no idea what I am doing and feel kinda uneasy about working in a hospital, but it's something I feel like I have to try. Also, I think it would keep me in check with how blessed I am because I would be around other people who are suffering and I think it would make me realize how much I have.

Wow, thanks for all these suggestions. Actually alhumdulillah I've really met some nice friends here, but sometimes I don't keep in touch like I should, so definitely I should keep in touch w/ them often and
we can inshaAllah strengthen our iman together. The suggestion on doing more such as qiyam prayers is also a good one, and I have been in a rut I need to start doing more and trying to grown more Islamically. Thanks for all these comments, Jazak Allah Khair!

Cry sister, cry.

Find out how you can cry. For your sins, for Allah, for he might deprive you from Leghaa Allaah. There is nothing worse than to be deprived from meeting Allah in hereafter. Frankly speaking that is the main reason human has been created for.

Wow sis you are just a stone throw away from me! I'm in Urbana! Like bro Ahmad said, hand out with good company Check out this link in regards to friends:

Another thing that I personally do is always remember Allah with not just my tongue, but with my heart. CONSISTANTLY increasing your worship also brings you closer to God. And finally, whenever I go out for a walk, I just look around and think about how amazing God is, and how he has blessed me (2 legs 2 hands, etc.) Remembering the blessings helps keep one in check.

Anyways, I know of some awesome sisters here in Urbana (you may know them allready), so if you want their contact info, holla.

Assalamu Alaikum Sister,

The Prophet peace be upon him asked us to "renew" our faith (Iman) always with "La Ilaha Illa Allah". He realized that as humans we will tend to to lock into comfort zones and "slow down" by just sticking to routines and our religion becomes then a "habit". So he asked us to keep on renewing our faith to break out of that state. There are many practical ways of doing that, such as fighting sleep at 3:00 am and doing a few rakaas of "Qiyam", fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, donating to the poor, and most importantly pondering upon the Signs of Allah..etc all those are acts of purification of the heart, and the more we purify it the closer we feel Allah and the more alive our Iman gets.

I feel the same way a lot, and especially when I first converted I had an amazing "high" that I thought I'll stay in it forever without effort but unfortunately reality is otherwise, we have to struggle in order to continuously purify ourselves and stay in the "high". I think of our hearts/souls as a white and clean garment, if we don't clean it regularly especially after we fall in dirty waters, it'll soil and becomes dirty.

So keep making new connections, all the time, with as many good people as you can find - because some will go, so let others come insha'allah.

Hang around with good people. My emaan was very low honestly, until I started meeting some good brothers in the community. I didnt have the family and friends there to support me, so it was hard for a long time. But alhamdulilah, these brothers are a blessing. The Ummah is like a finely woven rope, each strand is weak on its own, but when combined with other weak strands it can be built into something very strong, and very useful. I think there is a hadith like this also. But it is very very true. I just fear all these people I have connected to will move away for work or marriage soon, and I will be all alone again :(

What you are experiencing is very normal. Prophet (saw) had mentioned that Iman is has ebbs and tides like the ocean. When it goes low, he said not to be too hard on yourself by trying to force yourself to perform worship that your heart isn't in it, except of course for keeping up the wajib. In time it will grow more again on its own if you just try to stick to your minimum obligations when you are feeling low.

Basically when you are low, focus on keeping on the wajib and working on improving just one aspect of the wajib - like concentrating more in prayer.

Another thing to try is to start discussing Islam or reading Islamic works of a type that you actually find inspiring and interesting.

Making dua for help to get that high back really does work.

Taking some time to reflect and think about what made you fall in love with Islam in the first place can go along way. Where would you be without it?
