IMPORTANCE OF ISTEKHARA

Assalaam alaikum brothers and sisters,

we all have to face decision making in our daily lives: most of the decisons are hard and it confuses us weather to go ahead with the decision or not, i mean sometimes its jus scary to even think about the out come of the choices we make, like how its going to affect our lives.
well Allah has made that easy for us: the dua of istekhara is a dua that help us ask for guidence from Allah himself(direct contact). what could be easier than to ask advice from the one who knows the future and knows what good and bad for us, i mean we dont even know whats good an bad for us sometimes.
Anywayz,
Allah says int he quran:
" and consult them in the affair. then you have taken decision, put your trust in Allah.

INTERPRETATION:
whoever seeks the councel of the creator will not regret it and whoever seeks advice of the believers and giudence from from Allah will feel confident abotu his/her decisions.

Translation of the DUA:
" Oh Allah i seek councel of Your knowledge and i seek help of Your omnipotence, and i beseech You for Your magnificent grace. Surely You are capable and I am not. You know and I know not, and You are the knower of the unseen. Oh Allah if You know that this matter(mention your matter of the decision) is good for me in my religion and my life and my welfare in the life to come then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion and in my life and my welfare in life to come then distance it from me and distence me from it, then ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and help me to be contant with it.
Ameen.

wasalaam.

Turning to Allah for help in making a decision is not simply about using this specific du3 and praying 2 rakah's at the end of the day. We should be asking Allah for guidance and clarity EVERYDAY in our lives and EVERYDAY in our prayers. When it comes to making decisions, it is about having the faith and mindframe to detatch ourselves emotionally from the decision at hand, and completely surrendering to Allah. When I have asked for guidance in the past, I have necessarily used the specific du3 of Istikhara as is translated and written, but I have asked God something similar in my own way and own style. And I have not prayed the prayer just once, I prayed it after every single one of my daily prayers. Aside from that, throughout the whole day, I would just speak to God internally and beg Him to help me - whether I was on the train or at the cinema.

One thing we also need to keep in mind about Istikhara is the danger of becomming obsessive and seeing every little thing as a sign! We end up trying to analyse every single dream, feeling or action, and half the time end up getting more confused. When God answers us, there is no confusion and the path is clear and guided. Some people get their clarity immediately - some people have to pray for months and months!

There is no set rule. Have faith and submit! Allah M3aakum!
