IRC F***** up ur life or helped?

Seriously I know a lot of us blame IRC for cr@p that happened in their lives. But did it actually make you grow as a person or harm you?

You skipped a grade or got kicked out of college? or what?

Actually now that I think about it, thanks to Nettie, IRC did allow me to get in touch with other desis as there were none here at the time I was growing up. I also learned that despite being a FOB or ABCD (terms I'd never heard of before IRC) we're all basically the same.

Group hug, everyone!

Can't we all just get along???

For some strange bizarre reason, I used to keep logs of IRC and didn't know I still had them until a couple of months ago. I think I deleted them, but I remember reading and thinking "what the HELL were we all doing?"

Is there anyway to undo the trash bin? Nettie? Maybe you can send me a program or something...hah!

Beela

For me.. it let me get in touch with other desis.. and as a young lad.. it even gave me big bros and sis's which i lacked in real life... were they real role models? mmmm.. in some cases...

Meera - Let me explain the dost thing. He was working at the world trade center and back then the economy was bad. He got laid off and exactly week later the towers came crashing down. His work visa expired and it was really hard getting a job (especially after 911) - so he had to leave or be illegal - so he left.
his email address is [email protected] if anyone wants to talk to him!

Meera - your right it was fun, but when you find out that the people you used to talk to dont think "your special" (*cough cough* futtafut) and were most likely time-pass , kind of defies the purpose now. Reality check hits in.

These are fun topics. I am enjoying contributing to them. Well, I have heard some horrid stories about people who ruined their lives over a girl or a guy they met on IRC, families getting involved, men fighting over a girl, getting kicked out of school, who knows how much of it is true. Lots of people got married or dated folks they met on IRC. Man, even them hijabans/mullah type got lucky on there - no offence, in fact, I say more power to them! I just wish they didn't look at me funny if when seen with a boyfriend or friend who was a boy. I think that would be another topic of discussion! :)
Anyway, so how did it impact me? Well let's see, I do remember skipping lots of classes, opting to stay home and go on IRC instead of going out with friends. However, I also met some incredible people, had some long lasting relationships, learned a lot about many different things but particularly about human relationships. I know it sounds kind of cheesy but I am sure you'll agree - we all have had some really cool experiences on there.
I remember dost/sumair - sorry to hear that he had to return home.
Ehtesham, I didn't know you ruined a "semester or two" b/c of IRC hahaha, that's funny if it is true!

and who could forget those channel hacks, i.e. the battles between #india and #pakistan. i think i started to get anxiety attacks when #pakistan would get hacked and i couldn't find out where the rest of the channel regulars were hanging out... );

oh i never used LOL or ROFL on IRC. I had no clue about those acronyms back then....but the smileys do help now.

Sara: its a good thing u mentioned DOST's name there, warna the sentence was kinda redundant "best friends with dost" ;-

yeh those bad grades did mess a semester or 2 :(

oh and how about those long a$$ smileys ":))))))))))))))))))))" whatever the heck did that mean? double, triple, quadruple chins?

Hey, it just made me spell a$$ like that! Reminded me of moulana malik and gang :P

Meow - Yeah, true, one learns not too be so damn gullible (which reminds me of another journal that I should post... which has to do with not being behind the computer screen)

Yoaamir- you did make a friend like me *smirk* and we never even met til this day.

Eteshaam - you mean a semester or two...i think grade is an understatement....

IRC was my first experience with "chatting". The unfortuante thing is that it was back in the day where I had to go and plug the line into the telephone jack, which meant that if someone phoned, I'd get disconnected or the person calling would get a busy signal. In any case, I found that I would sneak downstairs to my brothers' computer room and log on, which meant they often missed some important calls (sorry guys). I think it made me realize that people often are not their true selves because they're behind the computer screen...and I learned to not be so damn gullible!

both. like ehtesham, my typing skills improved (LOL) and i met a lot of people (a few of whom i'm still in touch with), but it definitely had a negative impact on my academic career at the time. the resulting relations i had with ppl taught me some lessons as well - again, both good and bad.

my typing speed defiinitely broke a few records. initially it did mess up a grade or 2 but in the long run it was ok i guess...
