Iridium Flares and Other Satellites
Have you ever tracked an Iridium flare? Iridium is a maker of communicatoin satellites which have reflective antennas. When the timing is right you can see these satellites as very bright flares in the sky. You can also see things like the international space station (ISS) or the space shuttle. You don't even need a telescope.
First, go to this website: www.heavens-above.com Follow the directions and choose your location. You will see a section called "Satellites" and under that you can track the iridium flares. The magnitude of the flare tells you how bright it is with a larger negative number meaning brighter so that a -8 flare is much brighter than -3. Then all you have to do is find a flare that will go off at a convenient time and is bright enough.
The last time I saw one it was very impressive. It looks like a very bright star in the sky that appears out of nowhere and then disappears. The whole thing lasts only a few seconds but it's cool how predictable they are.
