Is is ok to ask your partner to be, to have an HIV test before marriage?

Say you are getting married. Irrespective of how well you know the person, you wanna be sure (and safe). Is it ok to ask for an HIV test? You can offer to have one for yourself. Still how can you do it, without offending the person/families etc!!!Be realistic and frank about this one. :) This is serious stuff!

I was watching this documentary about how sex, out of marriage is becoming common in mainstream India. Especially among the middle class. So this is not just for the ppl here in the West. This could apply any where.
I am interested in your opinion! so share freely

the power of suggestion is immense.

you can get people to dislike the taste of a medicine by telling them "don't worry about the taste, just drink it"

while if you said something like "this'll make you feel better, drink it"

they report the tastes significantly differently

reports cluster into "that tasted so nasty" and "a bit like strawberries"
from the same med. all cause the charismatic young physician primed them to respond in such a away.

telling someone somethign is going to hurt or "this may hurt a bit" will make them extremely sensitive to pain (i learned this the hard way when performing clinical breast exams)

sure, why not?
it boiled down to the power of suggestion and placebo effect. both very real phenomena

yes, it is becoming a bit of a problem isn't it? people somehow thinking that HIV is a little like living with diabetes - and therefore not being as careful.

do you believe in mesmerism plato?

Plato: ...cos you're a medic.

Have you taken the hypocrisy oath yet?

sex, IV drug use, needle sticks, blood transfusions prior to 1989 (thats on the very conservative side, 1985 is usually used) blood on blood contact, birth, and possibly (but not proven yet) breast feeding.

thats pretty much the only ways to get it.

if you haven't been in those situations you're free and clear.

most people who are diagnosed with HIV go through the whole "guilt, cheated, depression" phases. But there are treatments available that increase lifespan dramatically, to the point where it is concievable that infected people die of somethign entirly unrelated to HIV.

if you test + it is no longer a death sentance, you live longer with HIV than some cancers (I'm thinking lung and pancreatic definitly, most sarcomas, and possbly melanoma).

so, you are fck, but not as fck as being diagnosed with lung cancer (don't smoke folks, though as you can see in my pic, i smoke... sigh, the hypocrisy is palpable).

the problem with longer lifespan is that people live to transmit more.
hence the resurgance of HIV in the gay community, and in the ghettos. a second problem is that the increased survival prospects make people less afriad of it (not you guys apparently) and less likely to take precautions.

emm....
i dunno why i went into this....

Presumably you should know whether or not the person you are marying is a virgin or not. If they aren't then there should be no harm in asking for a test. I guess people have a strong incentive to lie about this kinda thing -- but maybe you shouldn't be marying someone who is willing to start lying from the start.

I guess I don't neccessarily understand the idea of lying about your virginity or not. Maybe if you're about to expire (i.e. girl over 30), then desperatee times call for desperate measures. But otherwise you would think you would want to marry someone who could accept you for the person you are.

Deep, In this time and age, I dont think many ppl care about viginity. I guess it could be important if the person is a virgin themself. Having said that, on the other hand it is important to others. So its subjective, based on your beliefs etc. It is unfortunate that this virtue is being lost in modern times.

Plato; Some really nice justification for keeping your virginity intact. Most men are quite immature when it comes to sex, so hats off to you! :)

I'm not mocking you...more men should be like you. I know Muslim men who follow Islam and pray and are decent good guys and all but who have slept with 15 different women by the time they are 30.....believe it or not!

Well, I must leave this conversation...tommorow I am going to California to be with my husband...no more naseebing for me when I am with him. Take care! ;)

i've had relationships as well, one lasting 3 years.
i've never crossed the line either.

there are some things that i would prefer not to cheapen, so that if and when the time comes, they remain precious, if only in my mind. Value derives from scarecity.

and this is somehting that can only be shared once after all.

50% seems high, but i'll be the first to admit that i don
t know nearly enough muslim women well enough to come up with my own estimate.

and, it may be different from city to city and country to country.

Not caring is not the same as not thinking less of someone.
you can still care about the person you marry, and her previous relationships and stil lnot think less of them

DPP- to divide this virginity issue from religion is hard, cause, wehn you come down to it, i'm religious so it would be dicietful to pretend that my opinions aren't influence in some way by it.

but,
over the whole "greatest gift " thing someone mentioned
thre is also the issue of a person wanting to maintain a special relationship with their spouse that others have not had. perhaps possesiveness, but it also comes down to what the relationship means.

is it unique?
people in relationships have thier own special songs and special places and whatnot, places that are important to them becaues they share it only with thier loved one, sex is something that is even more significant than that.

something that is "ours" and "ours" alone

intimacy between two people does not need to have a religious meaning to make it special.

Deep pan : Well i find LOVE to be one of the most beautiful emotions in the world infact the mother of all emotions. To love someone can never amount to sin !!! And specially if you want to spend ur life with someone cos u feel that you will achieve success both in this world and the one after with him/her by ur side.

Aaha ok!

ConfusedF: Yeah I am talking about the desi community. Why would I mention India, mate? ;)

Paradise: Where are you getting your stats from? I am thinking no where :P So make sure you state that IN YOUR OPINION :) You have brought up some good points so dont take me wrong.

As of virginity, everybody seems to care at some level i think, but we all cope with it, cuz of the changing times.

The original issue does question the virginity, as for some reason whenever we talk about HIV, intercourse comes to mind. That is a stereotype. May be we can overcome that with time. Good discussion........keep it on! :)

Jazztune, when young Muslim women live all alone, or with female roommates of the same age, in America, and date a man for several years, often assuming that he will marry her one day, "things" happen, and these things often lead to sex.

What you are saying, about how sex should be the "biggest gift that a husband and wife exchange after marriage"...that is indeed the way things are SUPPOSED to be amongst Muslims. That is the way we want them to be, and how we idealize them to be. Sadly, that is not the case in America.
I personally know of 5 different Muslim girls who were not virgins when they got married, and married men other than those that they had previously slept with. Four out of five of these husbands didn't care (well, one of these couples got married recently, so who knows, let's wait and see), the 5th husband I am mentioning did want to divorce her, and they ended up divorcing, but I was told it was because his mother hated her...so I am not sure that that guy was upset when he found out she was not a virgin. Maybe these guys were virgins themselves and so couldn't tell that their wives were not virgins.

Anyways, I am beginning to sound perverted. Everyone tells me I talk just like a guy, and I am beginning to realize how true it is. :P
