Choosa, i didn't say that i'd help someone to improve my reputation..
What i'm trying to ask people here is to cite instances where they've helped people and gotten into trouble for that...

You dont help people to imrpove your reputation, or so it can be said of you. Rather you help people because it is the right thing to do with the intention of helping them for the sake of helping them. Easier said than done I suppose.

Depending on how one defines 'trouble'...

I have been in cases where my intention was to help, but the other person didn't respond to it well, and that can lead to 'trouble' in terms of how he/she would lash out (if he/she were to, that is).

I agree, I yould first want to know what kind of help is needed. I could care less what people think of me so long as I'm doing my best to be a good muslim. I would try to help if it is needed so long as that help is not for any wrong intentions or purpose.

Peace

Depends what the help is needed for. If it is like helping his family or an emergency what is wrong with helping?

If i believe in my actions, then i would help the person. Neverthless of what others might say (or hamper my reputation).

yes to 'help someone, even though helping him/her would hamper your reputation etc..'.. might draw the line at losing an arm or leg tho.. :( what does hamper your reputation mean exactly ?

I'm with MEECHI 100% on this one....i'd help if i knew my intentions were right and not to have any expectations.

If I believed my intentions were sincere then yes, I would try to help.

And, to answer the JE title - yes, it can be risky to help someone. That's why when I try to help, I tell myself to try not to have any expectations.

I think its better to have tried to help than not at all - depending on the situation.

As they say, no good deed goes unpunished...
