...Urdu is so sweet and lyrical...nothing beats it...the closest languages to Urdu that allows the words to roll of your tongue I think are Persian ( no surprise there since Urdu comes from it....) and Spanish....

...without sounding like a blubbering idiot...Urdu can make your heart ache just by listening to it....especially Iqbals' poetry...that is why I got interested in his poems...

:)

Shahzelle and BWC: Atleast you have studied urdu at some level, I have jst studied the basics fr 3 years. Basics as in Islmail Meeruthi ki kitaabain. Saara zorr angrezi aur hindi pe thha. I guess I know and understand Hindi better than the other two, its a beautiful language too. But, like my ustaad puts it...Amaa..kitna hi hindi daan kaho khudd ko..rahoge to tum ehl e zabaan hi. @ urdu speaking !!

ha-ha :D ..I'm glad to know I'm not the only one struggling with the Urdu on this level...but, I think you understand it better...I usually must first get the gist of the verse before I break it down word by word--truthfully, Allama Iqbal's poetry inspired me to learn the formal Urdu now...tsk tsk me who did not pay too much attention to her Urdu classes when I was younger ...heehee...well only when one struggles can one achieve something...

I meant, what jazztune clarified. But you have further surmised Allama's theme so well..... and so very rightly quoted from the Quran, to further the point. But I am a novice at Urdu Adab, so lets plz show patience :)

... was actually reading Shazelle's comment about
'need for 'MAN' to achieve self reliance'....it triggered the countless discussions of man and his need to achieve on this plane of existence without sacrificing for the next plane of existence after death...but, more on that later...

... I think 'man' is afraid to be responsible for his actions and does go into a state of denial easily... as you point out the 'self-realization'/self-respect has not been reached...

...submission must come from the mind , heart and soul...while relying on Allah for guidance...it is a MAN's choice to reach that level of self-awareness... Allah guides those who guide themselves...

found the following verse on the net...maybe, in the present time, Muslims will realize the truth finally...

"Quran main ho ghota zan, aey mard-e-Msualman

Allah karey tujh ko ata jiddat-e-kirdaar

Jo harf-e-Qul il afw main posheeda hai ab tak

Iss dour main shayad wo haqeeqat ho namudaar"

2:272 The guiding of them is not thy duty (O Muhammad), but Allah guideth whom He will...

2:269 He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding.

BC: Well, those who read and understand Iqbal definitely know abt the connection of his writings i Islam. And nowhere do you find the mention of SELF RELIANCE in the verses quoted by Bongeek or myself. Its self realization and self respect. A Momin RELIES on Allah completely submitting his will to Allah and submitting himself to Allah's will and we have discussed that part in verses in earlier posts if you feel like going thru them.

self-reliance---what a concept for those who call themselves Muslim...a lot people don't know that Allama Iqbal based his poetry on the Quranic verses and concepts...
...people have lost the feeling of ISHQ for God and His truth....this truth can make mankind achieve a greater self awareness and thus, closer to the true worship for Allah...but, alas, self-awareness, self-analysis, self reflection and self-reliance is something to be feared...one of the sad truths is that they've stopped becoming accountable to themselves...instead, they're more than ready to say that ..."they can only do/believe what their forefathers have done/believed in..." and leave it that.... interestingly, Allah also declares repeatedly that those you who mention what the generations of the past have done even though the system of worship they've retained does not allow them to expand their minds, they will never be invited to feel the light of truth in this lifetime or next...

Thank you for that explanation. Indeed Allama and you are a rare species. But sometimes to make a point, parallels must be drawn.

One thing that really makes me admire Allama is his LOVE for Islam and his dream of seeing every muslim achieve the exalted, true and glorius status of a MOMIN. He has used several symbolic characters to define one. Shaheen and Allah ka sher are two such examples according to my understanding.

He says..

The laws or principles of dignity and self respect (jawanmardi) are honesty and siding with HAQ (Right/Truth) and the courage to speak the truth without faltering because, the true Momins (Allah ke Sher) do not understand diplomacy or shrewdness. The spirit of the shair lies in having the courage to side with the truth and keeping ur Zaahir and Baatin the same, cos if there is a duality, its Munafiqat.

This misra: wants us to recognize our self, through love for Allah: Once that happens we reach heights, by which we transport our hostaged soul beyond all worldly kingdoms/surfdoms.
