Islam - A one way road?

For so many years i did not know this, but this is something that i dont have an answer to.

In Islam, if you are a muslim and you ever decide to convert to any other religion, you are "wajab-ul-qatl" (a must kill).

Why?

Abdullah Saeed wrote a book "Freedom of Religion and Apostasy in Islam" www.abdullahsaeed.org

shows a divergent view, that they are not wajab ul qatl, and early Muslim scholars varies widely regarding the treatment of apostacy.

I've not read the book, but I think it's something I need to buy and delve further into.

Ok let me put it another way, Is there a punishment for apostasy in islam? if so what is it? i hope this will give everyone a better glimpse of the jist of my question.

I am not sure of the sources used to establish this particular bit if fiqh. My guess, however, is that once you accept Al Islam as revealed to Muhammad, saw, there is no better path. Thus there is a need to establish a strong inhibitory mechanism in the body of the shari'a to prevent people from considering a "downgrade" to judaism or another "people of the book faith" or, a'udhu billah, some other faith (including no faith at all (ref: Ali Shariati "religion vs religion")). I'll have to hit the books and see the source of this particular legal issue, though.... I can't imagine wanting to leave the Ummah, so I never considered this something worth studying.

I'm hardly an authority on Islam, but the statement quoted above, i.e. "if you ever decide to convert to any other religion, you are (a must kill)", sounds like nothing more than a man-made scare tactic to me. This is one reason why I'm generally turned off by organized religion. Pardon my ignorance.

ABSHAW: GO to meccaone.org to get some authentic info on ISLAM, InshaAllah, may Allah guide you and all of us on the right path. Alhambra productions by Shaikh Hamza, or Zaid Shakir are excellent sources.

Next time make sure your sources are legit! An authentic Hadith for you. "To kill one innocent being (REGARDLESS OF RELIGION) is as if killing the whole humanity.

ABSHAW: Your second link says this:
SOME OF THEIR LAST WORDS

JESUS: "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23:34. (said while dying on the cross at Calvary after being betrayed and sentenced to die for no legitimate reason).

MUHAMMAD: "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of the prophets." Bukhari, Vol. 1, #427 .

COMMENT
As I've studied both of these men's lives, I find that the above comparison details some of the strongest character differences. Here are their dying words, words that will mark the end of their lives. Christ asks God to forgive His enemies, while Muhammad utters a bitter curse against those who rejected his assertion of prophethood. Wouldn't it have been more appropriate for Muhammad to ask Allah to guide the Christians and Jews while he was dying?

CLEARLY THIS IS UNTRUE, and an attempt to show ISLAM as an unjust, violent and brutal religion!!!!

Abshaw: Copied from your third link:
The first time we find indirect speech turned into a personal approach is in the fifth stanza of the daily petition. A Muslim does not dare to begin the main prayer of his faith with the words, "You are my God" or "Our gracious God." his official prayer is not a personal conversation or talk with God, where he brings requests, intercession, thanksgiving and worship before him. Rather, the Basmallah can be compared to a puny man attempting to draw near to his exalted ruler. He stands with his head bowed, respectful and humble, before his mighty lord, hoping that Allah will listen to his murmuring.

Rather than surfing the net not knowing the authenticity of the websites, I spoke to someone I know personally and who has great knowledge about Islam and talks authoritively. He says that apostasy is also a form of blasphemy. Though Quran does not mention the sentence of death to apostates, yet Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did say that if a Muslim converts his/her religion then after it has been ascertained that the person is in his/her right senses, will be given a period of 3 days to revert back to Islam. Failing which the matter will be referred to Caliph/Khalifa and only he will be able to decide and can also condemn that person to death. Now, it is interesting to note that there is no caliph/Khalifa in today's world. So this practice cannot be carried on. Such cases has happened probably in Iran, Egypt and North Africa but those religious leaders have taken the law in their hand and no one except a Caliph/Khalifa has the authority to do so. I am thinking aloud. Is it that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had reasons to say this taking into account that era and is it that he knew that in today's world there will be no Calpih/Khalifa and hence this practice will not take place?

That does not shed light on the main subject Awais, though you have a valid point. (We all know that there are also some Muslims whose faith is not strong enough and who are prone to conversion at the hands of Christian organisations and missions).

Why would anyone convert from such a beautiful religion like Islam to any other at first place?

We really need to thoroughly check this out. For instance, I checked a website IslamQ& W. Imagine this is what they refer to: ?And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will be the dwellers of the Fire. They will abide therein forever?
[al-Baqarah 2:217. Yet at the same time when they intrepret they said that in Islam the punishment for apostasy is execution. This is a fatwaa by some Sheikh. What I am saying is that it's important for us to check the authenticity of the source. Lets see...

Affi: lets not jump to conclusions here, the so called "yahoods" site also referrs to hadith specifically, are you saying they just made it up I doubt that. However here are some other "non-yahood" links for everyone to read and analyse. answering islam site answering-islam.org.uk another from islam today site www.islamtoday.com sub_cat_id=48 lite of life site www.light-of-life.com and many more... all i did was type "punishment for apostasy in islam" in google and tons of links followed. I am hoping that its not true, but the more i read the sadder i get.

Mamad, Islam is a way of life, there's nothing minimal about it. Islam preaches peace and respect for all faiths, and people. Don't forget that Islam is the only religion that unites people of all races and backgrounds regardless of race, color, status..etc.

I did check that link. But as soon as I read that this is not "Quranic", I did not read any further. Will try to find out more. I hope the issue is not being mixed up with blasphemy because for that the punishment is death.
