I wish you a slightly early Eid Mubarak!
I just wanted to let you all know about an opportunity for us to make a difference in some brothers and sisters lives--especially now that Eid is upon us and I bet some of you are looking for gift ideas!
Islamic Relief, the highest rated Muslim charity, is having an orphan sponsorship program where you can sponsor Muslims orphans from Iraq, Bangladesh, India, Palestine, Chechnya, Sudan, Bosnia-- you name it. You can browse through orphans' profiles and then sponsor them. I thought it might be a truly great gift in the spirit of eid-- and it does so much good. Instead of the $30-$40 dollars we spend on a dinner in restaraunt once a month, I think we can spare it for a Muslim child in need of our help. It is a sadaqa that never ends.

I know we are all wary about donating to Muslim charities nowadays, but Islamic Relief is a well-established and trusted organization. It is a consultant organization for the United Nations and is a registed charity with the British government. It recently received FOUR STARS--the highest rating--on America's Charity Navigator. link
The URL for their charity is link/ If you cannot afford to sponsor an orphan, maybe just make a small donation to the organization. They are incredibly active in response to all humanitarian crises-- including Hurricane Katrina, the Earthquake in Southeast Asia, Tsunami, Darfur, etc.
